When you consider that you get a full lunch, with many choices freshly prepared, for about 50 people, you will realize that it comes to about $5 per person. And of course it is strictly Kosher.

High Holidays

A brochure was mailed today detailing our plans for the High Holidays. IF YOU PLAN TO JOIN US, AND WE CERTAINLY HOPE YOU DO, RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. This is an important aspect of our security and general preparations. PLEASE COOPERATE – even if you know that we know – that you will be attending. We ask that even are members (those who filled out the Membership form) reserve their seat/s on the Membership form. If you have not already done so PLEASE fill out your membership form ASAP.

There is a suggested donation to attend, but everyone is welcome no matter his/her ability to donate. ALL DONATIONS ARE GREATLY appreciated!

Programs for Adults, Youth, & Children on the Horizon

The team here has been hard at work preparing for the coming year. We will again be offering JLI (The Jewish Learning Institute). This year’s courses are particularly intriguing.

There will also be monthly Rosh Chodesh events for the women. See flyer below for details.

For our teens we will be offering C-Teens, the creative, engaging, educational and social-action program for our youth.  

We have not neglected our children, aka the future leaders of our people. We have added a ton of content to our Hebrew School program and are ready to present to them our C-Kids curriculum which is sure to inspire them making the Hebrew School experience enriching and fun! Remember, our students WANT to be here!

Updated Guidance from the CDC – Masks Required Indoors

According to the latest guidance from the CDC we are going to again mandate that everyone please wear a mask indoors at shul (as well as maintain social-distancing, frequent hand washing, and most importantly, NOT coming if you are not feeling well or were near someone who was not well).

Those who do not want to wear a mask are invited to sit by the doors on the outside where chairs will be set up.

We know that wearing masks is not fun (Rabbi E hates it), however, when dealing with matters of health the Torah commands us to err on the side of caution. We thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Soup and Challah

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. We will not be delivering it if no request was made. Often times we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. Parshat Ki Teitzei – When You Will Go Out

This week we read the portion titled, “Ki Teitzei,” which means “When you will go out.” The laws about how to treat a female captive are then shared. Later in the portion we are introduced to the idea of a “Milchamat Rishut,” an optional war.

There were different types of war that the Jewish people would engage in. Those wars that entitled conquering the Holy Land were called, “Milchamot Mitzvah,” “Mitzvah” wars, as it was a positive commandment to conquer the land and expel the Canaanites, who were exceedingly evil people. Lest we accuse the Israelites of being colonialists it is appropriate to remember that the Canaanites had driven off the offspring of Noah’s son Shem, from whom the Jewish people trace our roots. In other words, the Jews were simply repatriating the land that belonged to them and which the Almighty had given in a bequest to Abraham our father.

Astonishingly we learn about a different type of war – a war that was optional. The Torah explains that under certain circumstances the Jewish people would be allowed to expand the borders of Israel and fight wars with her neighbors in order to conquer additional lands. Now this does seem like colonialism! Additionally, we understand that war is a dangerous business. Do we not view life as being the ultimate currency? Are we not commanded to transgress almost the entire Torah (other than idol worship, murder, and adultery) to save a life?

This begs the question: why would the Torah allow an optional war?

The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory, offers us profound insights into the nature of the relationship of a people to its land as well as the intense human desire to own land, and any other material thing for that matter.

The teaching is based upon the critical premise that reality in this world is a reflection of the desires of G-d; that our reality is a reflection of and emanates from the spiritual reality. When the Creator formed the world and created humanity to populate it, in His perfect wisdom, He created specific lands that were aligned with specific peoples. It was no accident that, for example, the Egyptians populated Egypt, the Babylonians populated Babylon, and the Israelites populated Israel. Each land was conducive to the specific people to whom it was given. Each respective people would bring out the best in its designated land and vice versa. This means that each people had the tools as well as the potential to reveal the G-dliness within its particular land.

This explanation seems to strengthen our question! If a particular people is placed in a particular land who are we to choose to dislodge that people and conquer that land?

We see that the Jewish people were exiled from the Holy Land not once, but multiple times. Why? The exiles were caused by our people not fulfilling their destiny and neglecting to reveal the sparks of G-dliness found within our particular patch of land at a given time. In a manner of speaking, the land itself expunged us. This is how the Torah says it would be and the Prophets also emphasize this point numerous times.

In this regard the surrounding nations mirrored the Children of Israel. There were times when they neglected to fulfill their divinely mandated mission thusly failing to reveal the sparks of holiness within their land. It then became incumbent upon the Jewish people to conquer that land – the optional war was born.

This explanation can be extended to help us understand a very powerful drive with which we are imbued. Most people are driven to own material possessions. From houses to cars to clothing to gadgets we all want more, bigger, better. Most of us realize the need to curb our enthusiasm for material wealth lest we become enslaved to material pursuits at the cost of our spiritual health. The proverbial tail wagging the dog is not viewed in a positive light. But this explanation helps us understand that the underpinnings of this drive are not necessarily evil. When we understand that this drive is created from our desire to reveal the G-dliness found within the material we begin to grasp the massive potential we have to elevate the physical realm!

In order to keep these desires harnessed, to make sure that we view the material world and its riches as a means to an end rather than the end itself we need the direction of the Torah. Our desire to accrue material wealth does not trump the laws of the Torah which describe how we are to attain wealth legally. We may not steal, and if we do (Heaven forfend), that G-dly spark in that bit of material wealth will not be elevated. On the other hand, when we follow the rules, for example when we have fair weights and measures, and when we have the right intention, meaning to generously share our accrued material wealth with those less fortunate, we are promised success to a degree that borders on the miraculous. Thereby we have successfully navigated the sea of materialism gleaning the best from the world around us and harnessing it to reveal its underlying holiness. 

When we can do this we have revealed our G-dly spark and we literally uplifted our material surroundings demonstrating the truth – that the Almighty is indeed right here!

Haftarah of Shabbat Parshat Ki Teitzei

Isaiah 54:1-10.

This week's haftorah is the fifth of a series of seven "Haftarot of Consolation." These seven haftarot commence on the Shabbat following Tisha b'Av and continue until Rosh Hashanah.

Forsaken Jerusalem is likened to a barren woman devoid of children. G‑d enjoins her to rejoice, for the time will soon come when the Jewish nation will return and proliferate, repopulating Israel's once desolate cities. The prophet assures the Jewish people that G‑d has not forsaken them. Although He has momentarily hid His countenance from them, He will gather them from their exiles with great mercy. The haftorah compares the final Redemption to the pact G‑d made with Noah. Just as G‑d promised to never bring a flood over the entire earth, so too He will never again be angry at the Jewish people.

"For the mountains may move and the hills might collapse, but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace collapse."

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - NOW

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School & C-Kids

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Sign up for next year

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

These days it's hard to find deductions over our hefty standard deductions. If you are just on the borderline then here are some tips. 

Own and IRA, or have inherited one? You can direct the IRA administrators to roll over amounts from it directly to the charity of your choice. The money taken out of your retirement account is not taxable to you and can be counted as a potential charitable contribution.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.
