The Foundation Project - Donations

 We are raising funds that will be used towards completing our basement. This project will include a TEEN LOUNGE, CLASSROOMS, a PLAYGROUND, OFFICES, STORAGE SPACE, BATHROOMS, and more. We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. We will not be delivering it if no request was made. Often times we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Living with the Times -  Parshat Va’Yeshev – And He Dwelled
Taking an Early Retirement (or not)

This week we read the portion titled Va’Yeshev, which means ‘And He Dwelled’. The portion continues telling us about the life of Yaakov / Jacob, the third Patriarch of the Jewish people. Yaakov did not live what one could describe as a tranquil life. He had numerous trials and tribulations. He had an evil twin, Esav, who sought to murder him. He had an evil uncle, Lavan, who sought to defraud him and destroy his spirituality. He had his beloved daughter, Dina, raped and taken captive. 

Finally, in our portion, Jacob is able to settle down in the Promised Land. Finally some peace and quiet. Or so he thinks... 

No sooner had Yaakov started this phase of his life than a simmering sibling rivalry boiled over plunging Yaakov into a long and bitter state of mourning. The sibling rivalry came about because Yosef, who Yaakov saw as having the greatest spiritual potential and ability to counteract the evil Esav, was favored. He was the second youngest brother (just Benjamin was younger), but was still not shy about instructing his older, more mature, brothers. He regularly reported on their perceived deficiencies to their venerated father, embittering Yosef to his brothers. 

When Yosef had prophetic dreams about his primacy over his brothers their sibling rivalry evolved into a hatred, which led to the brothers selling Yosef as a slave, ultimately leading to his arrival in Egypt. The brothers hid their heinous act, which they undertook for the best of reasons (trying to secure their father’s faith in them following in his spiritual footsteps). Yaakov thought Yosef was dead, as the brothers showed their father his special garment torn as though by wild animals and dipped in blood. When Yaakov thought Yosef dead this led him into a profound state of mourning, from which he wouldn’t recover until he was reunited with Yosef more than two decades hence. 

The portion began by telling us that Yaakov was (finally) settling in to the Promised Land. By the end of the portion he is suffering in a way that only a parent who has lost a child can fully grasp. What lesson is there for us in this turn of events?

The answer offered by our Sages is that this world is, with certain prominent and notable exceptions, NOT the place to rest. We are here to work, particularly a man of Yaakov’s immense stature. He had an arduous task to complete – the building of the Jewish Nation – the eternal “Light unto the Nations.” 

The transformation of this lowly, mundane, and physical world to a place of revealed G-dliness will not happen by itself. That job was entrusted to us. Yaakov surely deserved some peace and quiet in his old age, but it was not to be. He had abilities to accomplish something that no one else could fulfill, and therefore he was summoned out of ‘retirement’ by the Almighty Himself so that he could complete his life’s mission. 

Our place in this world is to be proactive workers. I often marvel at the industriousness of our people – taking our job of refining the world seriously. It is only through such hard work that we will come to experience the ultimate blessing – the immediate arrival of our righteous Moshiach!

Haftarah of Shabbat Parshat Va’Yeshev

Amos 2:6-3:8.
This week's haftorah contains an allusion to the sale of Joseph by his brothers, an incident discussed in this week's Torah reading.
Amos opens with a rebuke to the Jewish People. G d had been patient with them notwithstanding their transgression of the three cardinal sins — sexual impropriety, idolatry and murder. Their fourth sin, however, crossed the line — the mistreatment of the innocent, widows, orphans and the poor.
G d reminds the Jewish people how He lovingly took them out of Egypt and led them through the desert for forty years and settled them in the Holy Land. There, He bestowed the gift of prophecy on some and inspired others to become Nazirites. Yet the Jewish people did not respond appropriately, giving wine to the Nazirites and instructing the prophets not to prophesy. Amos then goes on to describe G d's punishment for the errant behavior: "And the stout-hearted among the mighty shall flee naked on that day, says the L-rd."
The haftorah ends with an admonition from G d, one that also recalls His eternal love for His people: "Hearken to this word which the Lord spoke about you, O children of Israel, concerning the entire nation that I brought up from the land of Egypt. 'Only you did I love above all the families of the earth; therefore, I will visit upon you all your iniquities…'" As opposed to other nations to whom G d does not pay close attention, G d's love for His nation causes Him to punish them for their misdeeds, to cleanse them and prod them back onto the path of the just.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School & C-Kids

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Chanukah

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.  Our students want to be here!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Tzedakah news – 

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.

These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.
