Dear Friends,
The miracle of Chanukah—which is commemorated by lighting the menorah for eight days—represents more than just the oil lasting for eight days. The real miracle was that natural oil, which under normal circumstances dissipates when burned, remained at the same level and allowed the Jews of the time to light the Temple menorah for eight days with the required amount of actual olive oil.
This miracle is a reminder that the natural world is but another tool in G-d’s great arsenal, and that miracles can occur even within the framework of our daily lives. Every single person has the ability to witness miracles on a regular basis, and also to live a spiritual life within our mundane existence.
Every mitzvah is a miracle waiting to happen; and every time we perfors a mitzvah, we make that miracle a reality.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul
We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.
Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.
Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.
Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.
If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Living with the Times - Parshat Mikeitz – The End
From Strength to Strength

Today is the eighth, and obviously final day of Chanukah. As the sun sets tonight Chanukah merges into Shabbos. It is therefore incumbent upon us to seek a meaning in the juxtaposition of this auspicious holiday and this particular Shabbos.
As we know the holiday of Chanukah lasts for eight days. We Jews try to find a lesson in everything – particularly when it involves something as important as a holiday. The number eight has great significance in our belief system in that it represents the idea of going beyond nature. The seven days of the week represent the normal cycle of time. Even though we venerate the seventh day as Shabbos, it still falls within the realm of the natural cycle of time, as it happens weekly. We see this from the very beginning of time as recounted in Genesis.
Eight represents going one step beyond, indeed it is a step into the infinite. It is miraculous that human kind can reach beyond the physical limitations of time and space, especially since we are creations subjected to the limitations of a physical world. Yet that is precisely what a miracle is – it is a revelation of G-dliness that expands beyond the normal limitations of the laws of nature.
On Chanukah we celebrate numerous miracles. A correctly sealed jug of Kosher olive oil was found despite the enemy’s best efforts to render unfit every drop of oil they could lay their hands upon. The oil that was enough to last one day in the Menorah lasted eight days instead. The Jewish Maccabean Army defeated the much more powerful Syrian Greeks. All of these instances demonstrate the laws of nature being overturned. This is why Chanukah was proclaimed a holiday.
With this in mind how is it possible to grow from Chanukah? How can we take the miraculous message and energy of the holiday and bring it into the natural cycle of time to which we are all subjected? It turns out that this portion serves as the perfect conduit for such a transition.
In the beginning of the portion we learn of Pharaoh’s dreams which are accurately interpreted by Joseph. Dreams are a recurring theme in Joseph’s life. He had dreams that were prophetic as we will find out. He correctly interpreted the dreams of the Chief Wine Steward and Chief Baker, and now, he again correctly interprets Pharaoh’s dreams. Incidentally not only did Joseph’s correct interpretation help Pharaoh, it saved the entire world, as Joseph wisely suggested the correct solution to the impending famine that imperiled the world.
The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schnnerson of blessed memory, discusses the significance of dreams. We dream when our conscious, rational mind, is at rest. During that time our power of imagination is no longer limited to the rational. That is why impossible things can occur in dreams.
We are currently living in a state of exile. We are not where we belong. The Holy Temple is only a memory. The nations of the world still cling to their irrational anti Semitism. Many Jews have drifted from the path of Torah and have embraced foreign ideologies and lifestyles. And yet we know that the Divine Presence, though hidden, is still here with us. These seem to be mutually exclusive concepts. G-d can be here yet be hidden. And, by the way, He is hidden by things that He Himself created and energizes. This is why exile is dreamlike.
In our portion along comes the righteous Joseph who can see through the dreams and find the truth even in the impossible.
And now we can understand the connection between Chanukah and specifically this portion. Chanukah is a clear-cut miracle. This portion is a resumption of the natural order, but with the addition of a sort of revelation of G-dliness within the mundane. That is a step up – the miraculous within the mundane! To have the infinite revealed through the finite is a metaphor of the ultimate target, which of course is the immediate arrival of our righteous Moshiach!
This miraculous coexistence of the supernatural within the natural is also alluded to by the name of this portion. Mikeitz, the End, is also a reference to the times when all of humanity will (finally) dwell together in peace and brotherhood and our people will be free to resume unfettered service of Almighty G-d within the Holy Temple. Not only will the nations not try to hinder this divine service – they will help facilitate it.

Haftarah of Shabbat Chanukah
Zechariah 2:14-4:7.
This haftorah is read on Shabbat Chanukah as it contains a vision of the golden Temple Menorah.
This prophecy was communicated by Zechariah shortly before the building of the Second Temple. The haftorah opens with a vivid depiction of the joy that will prevail when G‑d will return to Jerusalem: "Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for, behold! I will come and dwell in your midst, says the L-rd."
The prophet then describes a scene in the Heavenly Court: Satan was seeking to incriminate Joshua, the first High Priest to serve in the Second Temple, because of the "soiled garments" (i.e. sins) he was wearing. G‑d himself defends the High Priest: "And the Lord said to Satan: The Lord shall rebuke you, O Satan; the Lord who chose Jerusalem shall rebuke you. Is [Joshua] not a brand plucked from fire?" I.e., how dare Satan prosecute an individual who endured the hardships of exile? "And He raised His voice and said to those standing before him, saying, 'Take the filthy garments off him.' And He said to him, 'See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I have clad you with clean garments.'"
G‑d then proceeds to outline the rewards awaiting Joshua if he and his descendents follow G‑d's ways. The ultimate reward is, "Behold! I will bring My servant, the Shoot, " an allsion to Moshiach, the Shoot of David.
Zechariah then describes a vision of a golden seven-branched Menorah. An angel interprets the meaning of this vision: "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel [descendent of King David, one of the protagonists in the building of the Second Temple], 'Not by military force and not by physical strength, but by My spirit,' says the Lord of Hosts." Meaning that Zerubbabel's descendent, Moshiach, will have no difficulty in his task, it will be as simple as lighting a menorah.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Chanukah
Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know. Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.
These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.
Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.
