Dear Friends,
On the Shabbat before Purim, Jewish communities around the world read a special Torah portion about the commandment to erase the memory of Amalek, the nation that attacked our ancestors as they left Egypt.
In Chassidic writings, “Amalek” represents the sense of doubt that sometimes creeps into our minds when it comes to doing a mitzvah. We may be doing what we need to, but doubt can dampen our enthusiasm and eventually lead to apathy. Amalek doesn’t want us to be excited about being Jewish. Amalek wants us to be like everyone else, and even if we do have different traditions and rituals, we shouldn’t make too much noise. Just keep it to yourself and do your thing.
But the Torah tells us that we must eradicate this notion from our psyche. Judaism is all about growth, and growth can only occur when there is enthusiasm.
Over the past two weeks, tens of thousands of Ukrainian Jews have been forced to flee. As Chabad rabbis and their families led their communities to safety, they did not leave an ounce of their enthusiasm for their mission.
In gas stations in Moldova and in the airport in Israel, they continued to help Jews do mitzvahs at the same time as they arranged (and continue to arrange) transport for thousands of refugees and food and shelter for people on both sides of the border. Their homes and belongings are gone, but their passion burns strong.

Communities around the world are uniting as never before to help our brothers and sisters from the Ukraine. I am making a heartfelt request to our community here at Chabad at La Costa to help support the efforts of the Chabad network of Shluchim who are coordinating relief efforts on behalf of the Ukrainian Jewish community.
The war has forced some Shluchim to evacuate with their communities. Many escorted busloads of refugees. Some have made harrowing journeys through bombed out streets with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Still, they’re working to provide critical, lifesaving relief.

Your generous contribution helped us distribute critical food packages in 131 communities throughout Ukraine. Food Distribution Cost: $1,691,470.
Your donation helped us evacuate 30,000 people to safe locations in Ukraine and 15,000 people to neighboring countries. You enabled 9,800 people to travel to safety in 185 busses; 5,100 people in minibuses; 7,200 people by train; and 8,000 people via private transportation. In Odessa alone, we have organized 35 evacuation buses to Moldova in the last three days. Evacuation Cost: $2,600,000.
With your assistance we were able to provide the Shluchim in refugee locations the means to host and feed over 10,000 people. Accommodation Cost: $270,000.

This Shabbos several of our regulars will be out of town. We are looking for folks who can come and enjoy our spirited services together in an uplifting (and safe) environment. If you can come please let us know.
We are being extremely careful and are asking the following to anyone contemplating coming:
- If you have ANY symptoms of Covid please do not come.
- If you have been around anyone who has Covid please do not come.
- If your doctor told you to be especially careful please do not come.
- If you are concerned/afraid please do not come.
- If you do come please keep your mask (properly) on at all times.
- Please maintain social distancing at all times.
- Please wash and sanitize your hands regularly, especially before the kiddush.
This is a very difficult situation. We ask for your support and understanding as we do our absolute best in providing a vibrant spiritual home that is SAFE for our community. This means that even if you are not concerned about Covid please be thoughtful about those who are concerned. This means even if you are extremely concerned about Covid do not be judgmental of those who feel they must attend shul to ensure we have a minyan.

A Word of Torah
Living with the Times
VaYikra – And He Called

This week we begin the third of the Five Books of Moses, titled VaYikra / And He Called. Many know it by its Latin name, Leviticus. It is called Leviticus because the majority of this book of the Torah deals with the sacrificial service that was carried out primarily by the Levites and Cohanim (Priestly class). That is why it is also called Torat Cohanim / The Laws of the Priestly Class, in Hebrew.
Animal sacrifice was one of the primary modes of service until the destruction of the Second Temple two thousand years ago. Many people do not understand the effectiveness of animal sacrifice. It was not the idea that a person sinned so he/she could have an animal slaughtered in his/her place. An animal sacrifice that was not accompanied by genuine contrition and deep Kavanah/intent, was utterly without value. No, the physical sacrifice represented the necessity of an internal sacrifice made by the individual who offered it.
With the destruction of the Second Temple, and the dispersal of the Jewish people as a consequence of it, a new mode of divine service had to be initiated. The Rabbis of those times decreed that prayer would take the place of the sacrifices. Until that point a centralized place of worship was the order of the day. After that point the home became the focal point of the divine service. As time went on the synagogue came into existence; reestablishing a local place where people could gather and engage in communal prayer albeit on a much smaller scale than during Temple times.
Forgive me, but with today’s special circumstances it seems that we are again reverting to a time (may it be VERY short!) where we have been moved out of the central location, the synagogue, and back into our homes.
What message can we find in our present reality?
The Diaspora, while extremely painful, also accomplished something that the Temple was not able to fulfill. When our people was dispersed amongst the nations we took with us our belief in the One, True G-d. Our influence spread to the four corners of the world. Additionally the Torah’s ethics of valuing the individual human life, blind justice, fair wages for workers, charity for the poor, accurate weights and measures, and hundreds of other revolutionary ideas were brought to the wider, human community.
Perhaps we now have a further opportunity (read ‘mandate’) for additional spreading forth of G-d’s message. Often times, people are at their best when under pressure. Right now the world is under pressure. In a way it is heartening to see the creativity bursting forth via social media. Just the memes on Facebook compare favorably with the funniest Superbowl ads of all time! On a more serious note, in my community we are offering more than three times the number of classes that we used to offer and our online attendance is many times larger than previously.
While it is hard for me to understand WHY G-d would want this circumstance I have no trouble understanding WHAT He wants us to do while we are in it! It is an opportunity, literally like never before, to connect with each other spiritually! Just like in the days of yore an animal sacrifice was needed to achieve optimal closeness with the Almighty, so too now an (inner) animal sacrifice is indicated to achieve optimal closeness with the Almighty. This time, we need to be much more self-reliant in finding the strength to keep moving forward.
G-d willing, this will be the final test, and with the help of G-d we will all pass this test with flying colors, and that, my friends, will lead to the immediate arrival of our Righteous Moshiach!

Haftarah of Parshat Va’Yikra
Isaiah 43:21-44:23.
This week's haftorah starts with a rebuke to the Israelites for abandoning the Temple's sacrificial service. Sacrifices are the dominant topic of the week's Torah reading, too.
The prophet Isaiah rebukes the Israelites for turning away from G‑d and refraining from offering sacrifices, turning to idolatry instead. G‑d exhorts the people to return to Him, promising to forgive their transgressions, as is His wont.
The prophet then mentions the futility of serving empty idols which may be crafted by artisans but "neither see nor hear nor do they know…" The haftorah concludes with G‑d's enjoinder to always remember Him and to return to Him.

Need a Minyan?
If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now
We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: King Solomon
Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know. Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul
We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.
Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.
Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.
Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.
If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.
These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.
Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.
