Dear Friends,
Next week, Jews around the world will be marking the 120th birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory. (see the flyer below)
Throughout the years of his leadership, whenever a big deal was made about a personal occasion, such as his birthday, the Rebbe made it clear that it was not about himself but about bettering the world and making it a home for G-d.
At the farbrengen marking the Rebbe’s 70th birthday in 1972, he requested a unique birthday “gift” — that in the coming year, 71 new Chabad institutions would be established around the world.
Indeed, by the time the Rebbe’s 71st birthday arrived, the number of new institutions — including synagogues, community centers, schools, and more — far surpassed the original goal of 71. And it didn’t stop there. For years to come, every time the Rebbe’s birthday came around, it was marked around the world by setting new goals for growth and expansion.
This year, as his 120th birthday on the 11th of Nissan approaches, new initiatives are being undertaken, new institutions are being opened, and new goals are being set.
We continue living with the Rebbe’s teachings and guidance, and we will continue giving him the birthday presents he clearly wanted. His influence lives on, including the drive he instilled in us to constantly do more for all of mankind, making the world ripe for the Final Redemption with the coming of Moshiach—may it happen speedily!

Sam McCarthy will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah this Shabbos. Sam has been a member of our community from the moment he was born. We will be celebrating with gusto and everyone is invited to join in the festivities including the Kiddush Luncheon that is in Sam’s honor.
Shabbos HaGadol THIS Shabbos!
The Shabbos before Passover is called the Great Shabbos as it was on this day that the great miracle leading to the exodus from Egypt occurred. The Jewish people, who were largely lacking in Mitzvos, were commanded to set aside a lamb for what would ultimately become their Passover Sacrifice. They did so quite publicly. When the Egyptians asked why the Jewish people told them about the impending plague, the 10th plague, which was death of the first born. The Egyptian first born rebelled against Pharaoh trying to release the Jews before the devastation of the plague would harm them. The self sacrifice of the Jews, risking their very lives to fulfill a divine commandment brought tremendous merits to them and made them worthy to be redeemed from Egypt. It is a BIG DEAL to attend shul on this Shabbos as this miracle will be discussed.

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. Sometimes we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!
Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. A Word of Torah
Living with the Times
Parshat Metzorah

George Orwell demonstrated so vividly that “If thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.” This is as true today as it was in 1946.
Even though we have been educated about its fallacy, we’re still falling for Newspeak every day.
In 2010, Anand Giridharadas observed that “When a company is ‘levering up,’ it often means, in regular language, that it is spending money it doesn’t have. When it is ‘right-sizing’ or finding ‘synergies,’ it may well be firing people. When it ‘manages stakeholders,’ it could be lobbying or bribing. When you dial into ‘customer care,’ they care very little. But when they call you, even at dinnertime, then it’s a ‘courtesy call.’”
It’s happening all around you, and the more you pay attention to it, the more you’ll notice it.
The good news?
You can get in on the scheme, too—in a good way, of course.
Good News On the Homefront
Parshat Metzora continues the topic of the last, namely the affliction of tzaraat. While the focus last week was on tzaraat of the skin and clothing, our parshah focuses on tzaraat that appears on the walls of one’s house. Long story short, if the lesion persists and spreads on the wall, the house must be destroyed.
While this may seem like a harsh punishment, Rashi, citing the Midrash, tells us something interesting:
This is [good] news for them that lesions of tzaraat will come upon them, because the Amorites had hidden away treasures of gold inside the walls of their houses during the entire forty years that the Israelites were in the desert, and through the lesion, he will demolish the house and find it.
The Talmud famously links tzaraat with lashon hara, slander, or, as Maimonides explains, with overall negative speech. Accordingly, we must wonder, how does this make sense? The owners of the house are being punished for doing something wrong, so why should they gain from it? Why should one who slandered another or spoke negatively be rewarded with discovering jewels in the walls of their home?
The Magic of Words
But the point of this punishment wasn’t just to give the sinner a slap on the wrist. Rather, it was a teaching moment to guide the sinner to properly appreciate the power of speech and thus use it the right way. Hence the treasure.
To explain:
Words are extremely powerful. Often, when we think about something, the idea is somewhat hazy. When we go ahead and articulate it, however, all of a sudden, the idea sharpens and comes into focus. It’s as if words possess the power to expose things that no amount of thinking can do.
Tyrannical regimes have been upheld with words, and healing has been brought to suffering souls with words. As many wise people throughout history have understood, when ideas are articulated the right way, they can literally topple governments, change minds, and bring tremendous goodness.
Kabbalah supports this idea, explaining how words reach into the deepest part of the soul. Thought exposes the workings of the mind, but words burrow straight to the source of all ideas, to the soul’s endless creative capacity, and as such, they expose new depth, clarity, and force.
Expose Jewels, Not Slander
Back to the person with tzaraat on their home. Yes, they sinned. They used words in a negative way. And that’s terrible. But the Torah doesn’t simply stifle negative speech and call it a day. That would only be half the job and a missed opportunity.
The point isn’t to just stymie negative speech but to advocate and harness the tremendous power of words in a positive and constructive way. So, if a person is going to use their words to expose something, to articulate a grand idea, to reach into their soul and bring up something revealing, it should be like the person who tears down the walls of their home and finds ... jewels.
Be Bold and Articulate
Much ink has been spilled over the power of words. Beyond simple tools we use to communicate with one another, great thinkers from the past observed just how much can be accomplished with the right language. Remember Orwell?
What does that tell us?
Choose your words wisely. Don’t just refrain from saying negative things. Tear down the walls of your home and expose those jewels! Be bold and articulate, spreading good ideas and positive energy around you.
Start dispensing compliments. Comment on a friend’s smile, tell a coworker how nice it is to chat during the day, or let your parents know that they did a great job raising you.
Learn something new—a Torah thought—and share it with the people around you. The moment you’re forced to articulate it to the public, it will take on new shape and meaning.
That’s the magic of words, and it’s the magic the Torah wishes to tell us about when it plants jewels inside a slanderer’s house.

Haftarah of Parshat Metzorah
II Kings 7:3-20.
This week's haftorah discusses the story of four men stricken by tzara'at, a skin ailment caused by sins — one of the main topics of this week's Torah reading.
Haftorah's backdrop: King Ben-Hadad of Aram besieged Samaria (the Northern Kingdom of Israel). The resulting famine was catastrophic, reducing many to cannibalism. King Jehoram of Israel wanted to execute the prophet Elisha, considering that his prayers could have prevented the entire tragedy. Elisha reassured the king: "So has G‑d said, 'At this time tomorrow, a seah of fine flour will sell for [merely] a shekel, and two seahs of barley will sell for a shekel in the gate of Samaria.'" One of the king's officers present scoffed at the prophecy: "Behold, if G‑d makes windows in the sky, will this thing come about?" Elisha responded, "Behold, you will see with your own eyes, but you shall not eat there from."
Now, four men suffering from tzara'at dwelled in quarantine outside the city. They too were hungry, victims of the famine. They decided to approach the enemy camp to beg for food. They arrived only to find a deserted camp. For "G‑d had caused the Aramean camp to hear the sound of chariots and the sound of horses, the sound of a great army. And they said to one another, 'Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us.'" The entire enemy army fled, leaving behind their tents, horses, donkeys and provisions.
The four men went to the city and reported their findings to the gatekeepers who, in turn, informed King Jehoram. Though originally thinking that this was an ambush planned by the enemy, the king sent messengers who confirmed the miracle. The people swarmed out of the city and looted the enemy camp, thus breaking the famine and fulfilling Elisha's prophecy.
And the officer? The king placed him in charge of the city gates. He was trampled to death by the rampaging crowds — after seeing the fulfillment of the prophet's words.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now
We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School & C-Kids
Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know. Our students want to be here!

Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul
We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.
Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.
Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.
Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.
If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
