Dear Friends,
Tisha B’av is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, when we mourn the destruction of both Holy Temples, in 423 BCE and 69 CE.
Their destruction represents the greatest tragedy in Jewish history, for it marks our descent into the state of physical exile and spiritual displacement in which we still find ourselves today. Thus the destruction is mourned as a tragedy that affects our lives today, 2,000 years later, no less than the generations that experienced it firsthand.
At the same time, Tisha B’av has the potential to become the most joyous day, as it is the birthday of Moshiach, the future redeemer of the Jewish people. We hope and pray every day for Moshiach to come and transform the sadness into happiness, and Tisha B’av will be the greatest Jewish holiday.
This year, we have a small taste of that. Because the 9th of Av is on Shabbat this year, the fast is postponed until Sunday. As such, not only do we not mourn on Shabbat, but we celebrate and observe Shabbat just as we would any other week, and perhaps even more, since we need to make a point of avoiding any semblance of mourning.
With a taste of what Tisha B’av will be like in the era of redemption, we pray that it becomes permanent already this year, and we celebrate the day with Moshiach himself!
Shabbat shalom,
Shabbat shalom,

Lots of People Out of Town – PLEASE COME THIS SHABBOS
Lots of our regulars are out of town this week so we are seeking to make sure we have a Minyan ON TIME. If you are able to be here please respond to this message as soon as you can.
9th of Av Fast Day THIS Sunday – Special Services and Observances
This Shabbos is named Shabbos Chazon – the Shabbos of Vision – as it is named for the Haftarah that will be read tomorrow. This is the final of the three Haftaros of admonition, which recount the warning the people received before the calamity of the destruction of both Holy Temples took place. The warnings were meant to inspire the people to repent before it was too late. Regrettably, the people did not heed the warnings of the Prophets and the Temples were destroyed leading to the long, bitter exile. Shabbos is the 9th of Av so the fast is pushed to Saturday evening through Sunday, as we don’t fast on Shabbos except when Yom Kippur falls on Shabbos.
Tisha B’Av Schedule:
Saturday at 7:43pm – Fast Begins
Saturday at 8:45pm – Evening Services & Chanting the Book of Lamentations (Megillat Eichah)
Sunday at 8:30am – Morning Services with Torah Reading (NO Tallis and Tefillin donned until later)
Sunday at 7:00pm – Afternoon Services with Torah Reading (WITH Tallis and Tefillin)
Sunday at 8:10pm – Evening Services & Break the Fast (Light Refreshments)
Tisha B’Av Mourning Practices:
No Eating or Drinking
No Bathing
No Using Oils or Creams
No Leather Shoes
No Marital Intimacy
We don’t listen to music.
We don’t buy or wear new clothing or freshly laundered clothing. We do wear freshly laundered clothing in honor of Shabbos, however.
We don’t go swimming.
We don’t go on vacation or travel overseas or outings.
If there is a medical reason to do any of the things listed above one should consult with an expert Rav for guidance as to how to do it in a permitted way.
We wish everyone a meaningful and easy fast! A good way to prepare is to drink a lot of water on Shabbos before the beginning of the fast.
We need to make sure we have a Minyan for the Tisha B’Av services. If you are able to commit PLEASE respond to this message. Thank you!

Kiddush Sponsor(s)
This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by Beverly Galperin and her family in honor of the birthday of Misha (Michael) Galperin. Misha was the driving force behind the construction of our new building. He was a truly amazing person, brilliant and driven to achieve great things. Misha always celebrated his birthday and those of his family members with great fanfare and joy. We therefore are keeping the tradition alive in his blessed memory.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in our weekly Shabbat meal together.
An Important Note about Kiddushes –
The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).
There is no such thing as an exclusive Kiddush sponsor.
This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.
We thank you for your support and understanding!
Lots of People Out of Town – PLEASE COME THIS SHABBOS
Lots of our regulars are out of town this week so we are seeking to make sure we have a Minyan ON TIME. If you are able to be here please respond to this message as soon as you can.

You can sponsor a Kiddush to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, mark a Yarzeit, or for any other reason, or for no reason at all.

Parshat Devarim - How Have We Survived?
Taken from Chabad.org
Based on the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe
From Rabbi Yossy Goldman
What is the biggest miracle of our generation? The fall of Communism? The peaceful political transition in South Africa? That Fidel Castro still runs Cuba?
Surely for us, indisputably, the greatest miracle of all must be that after the Holocaust the Jewish people picked themselves up and rebuilt Jewish life and Jewish communities. Is there anything more extraordinary than that Jews who were singled out for extermination because of their faith should nonetheless want to embrace that same faith and still be Jewish?
This week we enter the period of the “Nine Days” leading up to Tisha B’Av, our national day of mourning. We remember the destruction of both our Temples, and pray for Jerusalem to be restored to her former glory.
In Eichah, the Book of Lamentations, which we read on Tisha B’Av, there is a verse (3:22) that reads, “G d’s kindness surely has not ended, nor are His mercies exhausted.” Rashi offers an alternative interpretation: it is by G d’s kindness that we have not come to an end. In the words of the Midrash, “He spent His wrath on the wood and stones” of the Temple structure—His house was destroyed but His people survived.
So this is an appropriate time to reflect on Jewish survival. In the face of the demise of all the great ancient civilizations and empires—Egypt, Babylon, Greece, Rome, Persia, and more recently, the Third Reich—what is the unique secret of Jewish survival? Despite the destructions and diasporas, notwithstanding the holocausts that have decimated us through the ages, how did we survive? How do we survive? And, most importantly, how will we survive?
Of course, the simple answer is that G d will never allow us to disappear. We live by the ongoing miracles of divine intervention. But let us take a quick tour of history to see if we can put our finger on the most important ingredient in our unbelievable tenacity of spirit.
Some people might say it is our national homeland that has been the one key element in our continuity. Indeed, Israel is our eternal homeland, and we pray for the return to Zion three times a day and more. It is central to everything we believe in; it is our heart and soul. It unites us wherever we are and wherever we have been. It is in our dreams, hopes and aspirations.
But, while we will never relinquish our eternal claim to it, the reality is that we have been away from our homeland longer than we’ve been in it. The fact of the matter is that, even today, there are more Jews scattered around the world than there are in Israel. So, as uncompromisingly committed as we are to our homeland today, and as critical as it is to our global stature and security, geography could not have been the main factor in our survival throughout history.
Is it, perhaps, a common language? Indeed, Hebrew is our national language, and is still the language of our prayerbook. But are there not people reading these lines who could not read them if they were in Hebrew? Certainly, the vast majority of Jews today do not speak Hebrew, and I shudder to estimate the percentage of intelligent Jews who are Jewishly illiterate.
Throughout history we had a variety of vernaculars. Aramaic, Greek, and even Arabic, were at one time the most popular languages in Jewish communities of old. In more recent generations Yiddish or Ladino, like English today, have been the preferred vehicles of communication for most Jews. We simply cannot claim a common language to be the overwhelming factor in our continued uninterrupted existence.
How about culture? Well, have you ever tried offering a Sephardic Jew gefilte fish? Or an Ashkenazi Jew couscous? Food and music are cornerstones of any culture; both will vary markedly between East and West. A regular synagogue-goer from Golders Green will probably be totally lost at a service in Singapore. And vice versa. Honestly speaking, we actually do not have one common culture. We have adopted many nuances of style in food, music and dress from our host societies. Environment affects.
The one and only feature absolutely common to all our people all the time, the uniquely unifying entity that has gone beyond borders, across continents, cultures, languages and lifestyle, has been the Torah. Whether in Israel or Babylon, Minsk or Madrid, Sydney or San Francisco, Johannesburg or Jerusalem, the Jewish way of life as enshrined in our holy Torah and its commandments has been the single most important element in keeping the Jewish spirit alive and vibrant. Not some vague, sentimental sense of “Yiddishkeit” either, but a clearly defined value system that has been transmitted faithfully down the generations wherever we have lived.
The clearest proof of this idea is the fact that where there has been an abandonment of the traditions of Torah, assimilation has followed almost immediately—and with tragic consequences. Those pockets of Jews have simply not survived.
Of course, G d is the ultimate miracle maker of Jewish survival. But there’s no magic at work here. G d has given us the secret. We hold His key in our hands. Just being Jewish by birth does not guarantee survival of any kind. Only where there has been a concrete commitment to the study of Torah, to teaching it to our children, and to the fulfilment of its eternal practices, has this miracle been seen to happen.
May our dedication to Torah grow, so that Jewish survival and the flourishing of Jewish life may be assured forever. Please G d, our prayers for the rebuilding of Zion and the wholeness of our land and our people will soon be answered. Amen.
Haftarah for Shabbat Parshat Devarim
Isaiah 1:1-27.
This week's haftorah is the third of a series of three "haftarot of affliction." These three haftarot are read during the Three Weeks of mourning for Jerusalem, between the fasts of 17 Tammuz and 9 Av.
Isaiah relays to the Jews a G dly vision he experienced, chastising the residents of Judah and Jerusalem for having rebelled against G d, criticizing them for repeating their errors and not abandoning their sinful ways — even after having been reprimanded and punished. "Woe to a sinful nation, a people heavy with iniquity, evildoing seed, corrupt children. They forsook G d; they provoked the Holy One of Israel." Harsh words are employed, comparing the Jewish leaders to the rulers of Sodom and Gomorrah. G d states his distaste for their sacrifices and offerings which were flavored with pagan customs. "How has she become a harlot, a faithful city; it was once full of justice, in which righteousness would lodge, but now it is a city of murderers…"
Isaiah then speaks gentler words, encouraging the people to repent sincerely and to perform acts of justice and kindness towards the needy, orphans and widows, and promising them the best of the land in return for their obedience. "If your sins prove to be like crimson, they will become white as snow; if they prove to be as red as crimson dye, they shall become as wool." The haftorah concludes with a promise that G d will eventually reestablish Israel's judges and leaders, when "Zion shall be redeemed through justice and her penitents through righteousness."
Note: The first word of the haftorah is "Chazon" ("The vision [of Isaiah]"). The Shabbat when this haftorah is read, the Shabbat before Tisha b'Av, is thus called "Shabbat Chazon," the "Shabbat of the Vision." According to chassidic tradition, on this Shabbat the soul of every Jew is treated to a "vision" of the third Holy Temple that will be rebuilt with the coming of Moshiach.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.
Membership
NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.
We can help.
Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!
Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.
Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.
We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed
PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.
THANK YOU for your cooperation!
Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul
We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.
Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.
Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.
Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.
If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

►Pammy's Pony Parties and Petting Zoos
I am a small Jewish farmer running my business in La Costa called Pammy's Pony Parties and Petting Zoo. I arrive with my animals at little children's birthday parties, senior homes, graduation parties, and resorts in the area, to share my love of animals. I also do animal therapy with children and adults. Fantastic!! Call me to make an appointment or set up a birthday party.
