MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Dear Friends,

The 15th of Av is described as the most joyous day on the Jewish calendar. Many happy events occurred on that date in our history, but the main reason for the joy is because it follows Tisha B’av, the saddest day on the calendar.

On the 15th of every Jewish month the moon is at its fullest, symbolizing the rise after the fall. And since no fall is greater than the destruction of our Holy Temples, which we mourned for on Tisha B'av, the rise that follows is also the greatest possible.

The stronger the darkness, the greater the subsequent light will be. So we pray that after the immense darkness of exile, we will experience the greatest light possible, with the coming of Moshiach and the rebuilding of the Temple!

May it be in our times.

Shabbat shalom,

SHABBOS NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
We are Open for Services this Week – And there will be Soup & Challah

VERY Special Shabbos THIS Week – Please Join Us

This Shabbos is called Shabbos Nachamu, named for the Haftarah. We begin the Seven Weeks of Consolation, which follow the destruction of the Holy Temples commemorated last week on the 9th and 10 of Av. In this week’s portion we will read THE 10 COMMANDMENTS! It is a great Mitzvah to listen to this reading, as we will hear the precise words heard by the Jewish people 3,334 years ago. In fact, we should endeavor to bring every Jewish person we can to listen to the words that changed the world.

Services begin tomorrow at 10am, and the Torah reading will take place at about 11am.

Friday Night Services TONIGHT @ 7pm

We have services scheduled for this evening to joyously welcome in the Shabbat! We will also be marking the Yarzeit of Shimon Perez, one of the founding members of our congregation.

We Are Here for YOU, and We Are Asking for YOUR Support – New Membership

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY RESPONDED!

Dear Friends,

Do you enjoy the services we offer, the classes we conduct, the educational opportunities we make available for your children, the social programming we host, the educational materials and Jewish Art Calendar we distribute, the soup and Challah we provide, the counseling we make available, or the pastoral services we offer?

Does it make you feel good knowing we are always here for you? Are you happy that we provide all of the above to anyone who needs our help and regardless of their level of observance or ability to pay?

We strive to serve as a house of goodness and kindness.

It is YOU that makes this possible through your generous support.

Please, this year, ‘make it official’, and become a supporting member of this precious enterprise, of OUR precious enterprise.

Becoming a member means that you make a monthly financial commitment. The income generated through membership donations is what fuels everything we do. Our members are our partners and ‘own a share’ of every Mitzvah we do. Membership donations are also tax-deductible.

Please follow this link and join the family! www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/Membership

THANK YOU and G-d bless!
Gratefully,
The Coastal Chabads Team

Kiddush Sponsor(s)

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by the Perez, Fisch, and Kadoche family in loving memory of Shimon Perez on his Yarzeit and Marion Baccarach Fisch on her Yarzeit. And by the Alter family in loving memory of Charlie Kaufman obm.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in our weekly Shabbat meal together.

An Important Note about Kiddushes –

The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).

There is no such thing as an exclusive Kiddush sponsor.

This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.

We thank you for your support and understanding!

Kiddush Sponsors Needed

We are currently seeking Kiddush sponsors for the High Holidays, October, and ongoing from there. If you would like to do this tremendous Mitzvah, which brings beautiful blessings to those who undertake it, please respond to this message or call the office at 760-943-8891. You can sponsor a Kiddush to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, mark a Yarzeit, or for any other reason, or for no reason at all.

Parshat Va’Etchanan - The Ten Commandments – Not Multiple Choice
Taken from Chabad.org
Based on the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe
From Rabbi Yossy Goldman

Often, I hear people say, “Well, I am not all that religious, but I do keep the Ten Commandments.” At such times I’m tempted to say, “Really? You do know that The Ten Commandments are not multiple choice . . .” I sometimes wonder if the people who glibly make that claim actually know what the Ten Commandments are . . .

Moses reviews the Big Ten in the Torah in Deuteronomy. Why not go through the list, so we can all get a better idea of how we score?

1) I am the L‑rd thy G‑d. Basically, this is the command to believe in one G‑d. I have every confidence that we all get full marks on this one.

2) Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. Okay, so you don’t make a habit of bowing down to that bust of the Buddha in your living room. The question is, should it be there in the first place? And isn’t it interesting that today we have all these “Idols” competitions being run around the world. Then, of course, there are all those well-established contemporary idols we tend to ogle and worship, celebrities like Brad Pitt, Madonna, Donald Trump, or even (Heaven protect me) Oprah.

3) Do not take the name of G‑d in vain. This is not only about taking oaths or swearing in court. What about swearing in the street? How many choice four-letter words are in your vocabulary? And why drag G‑d into those graphic expressions?

4) Observe the Shabbat day to keep it holy. Interestingly, the Ten Commandments appear twice in the Torah. In Exodus, the fourth Commandment begins with Zachor—Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. This week, we read Shamor—Observe the Sabbath day. “Remembering” is achieved through positive acts such as kiddush, candle-lighting, etc. “Observing” Shabbos, to guard it from any desecration, is the hard part. It may cramp our current lifestyles. That is where true commitment comes in.

5) Honor thy father and thy mother. Many people do indeed fulfill this mitzvah in exemplary fashion. I stand in admiration of sons, daughters, and often in-laws, who care for and tend to the needs of an aged parent or parent-in-law. They shlep, they cook, they humor and often tolerate irritable, cantankerous elders. This commandment seems to get more difficult as time progresses. Yet the Torah makes no distinctions based on age. It is our responsibility to look after our parents when they are dependent on us, as they looked after us when we were dependent on them.

6) Thou shalt not murder. Well done. Here’s another easy one to fulfill. I’m sure not one of you reading this ever murdered anyone. You thought of doing it, you almost did it, but, in the end, Jews are not the murdering type. We can safely tick another one.

7) Thou shalt not commit adultery. Umm . . . Let’s move on the to next one.

8) Thou shalt not steal. Strictly speaking, this refers to kidnapping in particular. However, all stealing—including the white-collar methods—is included.

9) Thou shalt not bear false witness. How truthful are we? Even if we are not under oath, our word should be sacred. I remember hearing an old rabbi being introduced to a group of university students simply as a “man who never told a lie.” How many of us could make that claim?

10) Thou shalt not covet. Not easy either. Commentaries define this injunction as a prohibition on badgering someone, or conniving, to acquire—even legally—that which belongs to another. Go get your own. Why must it be his spouse, house or car?

There you have it. Did you score full marks? Did you pass, or are you in the forty-percent-or-less bracket? Worth working on, isn’t it? Hopefully, we can all improve our score, and one day claim with justification that we really do observe the Ten Commandments.

Haftarah for Shabbat Parshat Va’Etchanan

Isaiah 40:1–26

This week’s haftorah is the first of a series of seven “haftarot of Consolation.” These seven haftarot commence on the Shabbat following Tisha B’Av and continue until Rosh Hashanah.

This section of Isaiah begins with G‑d’s exhortation to the prophets: “Console, O console My people . . . Announce to Jerusalem that her period of exile has been fulfilled and that her sins have been forgiven.”

Isaiah’s prophecy describes some of the miraculous events that will unfold with the onset of the messianic era, such as the return of the exiles to Jerusalem, the revelation of G‑d’s glory, and the rewards and retribution that will then be meted out.

The prophet then goes on to comfort the people, describing G‑d’s power and might, and reassuring them of His care for His people.

Weekly Sermon will take place immediately following the Daily Tanya class, on Erev Shabbat. It usually is at about 9am, but if you cannot catch it live it remains recorded on the Rabbi’s Facebook feed.

Join Rabbi Eilfort Friday mornings on Facebook Live for his Weekly Sermon. If you have not already done so, please send Rabbi Eilfort (Yeruchem Eilfort) a Friend Request on Facebook!

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to  [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Hebrew School & C-Kids

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.  Our students want to be here!

Please contact our Hebrew School Director, Morah Chaya Eilfort for info at [email protected].

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.
