MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

This week's Torah portion opens with G‑d appearing to Abraham three days after his circumcision.

At age 99, Abraham willingly accepted the fact that despite decades of worshiping G‑d and encouraging others to, he was still imperfect. When G‑d told him he had more to do, he didn't question and was prepared to move up a rung, despite already being the most devout person on the planet.

Abraham taught us that we must always look for ways to improve, even late in life and even after tremendous accomplishments. He also taught us that recognizing our imperfection should never prevent us from striving for greatness. Even when we are still working on improving ourselves, we can help others and work to make a difference in the world.

Shabbat shalom,

Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate. Even if you do not catch the class live it will be saved on the Rabbi’s feed so you can watch it at your convenience.

New JLI Course Beginning

What is G-d? Where is G-d? How did Hashem come to be? Is G-d a He, a She, or a They? These are the questions that were asked this week. What will we ask next week?

New Hebrew School Year Begins

The key to a Jewish future lies in how we educate our children now. It is our sacred duty to instill within them a love and understanding of Judaism. That is only possible through education, or as we like to call it, ed-JEW-cation.

Our Hebrew School is designed to maximize the time our students spend here in an uplifting and inspiring manner. We will convey the beauty of our traditions through projects, stories, songs, and conversations. We don’t ‘talk at’ our students. Instead we engage them in discussions, which we have found to be a more conducive way of imparting knowledge. Positive reinforcement is a critical part of our approach.

We endeavor to give them not only an understanding of the Jewish Calendar and practice, but also skills in the Hebrew language.

Please call the office to schedule your appointment to discuss the needs of your child and what you hope to he/she will get from Hebrew school. 760-943-8891.

Kiddush Sponsors

Miriam Reisman is sponsoring this week’s Kiddush in loving memory of Jeri Reisman. Join us as we honor Jeri’s memory.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in our weekly Shabbat meal together.

An Important Note about Kiddushes –

The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).

There is no such thing as an exclusive Kiddush sponsor.

This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.

We thank you for your support and understanding!

Shabbos Parshas Vayeira – Jealous of Your Brother?

From Chabad.org
By Rabbi Yossy Goldman

Did you hear that in this year’s World Happiness Survey, Israel ranked 9th in the world? Yes, Israel, with its multiple insecurities, came in higher than some of the most powerful, stable, and conflict-free nations on earth. Ahead of Australia, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and even one place ahead of New Zealand!

Israel is surrounded by enemies who threaten total extinction, and yet its people are among the happiest in the world. How?!

I would like to believe that it’s not because we’re a bunch of naïve fools whistling in the wind as the hurricane blows in. I fervently believe it’s because we live with a sense of purpose and a real mission in life—a history and a destiny. The People of Israel have a place in G‑d’s world and a job to do, and you’d better believe we’re not giving that up—not for anything or anyone.

It seems to be something we inherited from our founding father, Abraham.

This week’s Torah reading includes the stories of Avraham’s final and supreme test of faith—the Akedah. Would he be prepared to offer up to G‑d the son for whom he had waited for so long, finally borne to him at the age of 100?

As we know, it was only a test, which Abraham and Isaac both passed with flying colors.

But I would like to draw your attention to the very end of that story, where a few lines are almost completely overshadowed by the preceding events. The dramatic finale has just come to a climax; Abraham lived up to his calling. What does the Torah tell us next?

And it came to pass after these matters, that it was told to Abraham saying: "Behold Milcah, she also bore sons to Nahor your brother. Uz, his first born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel, the father of Aram. And Kesed and Hazo and Pildash and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. And Bethuel begot Rebecca." These eight did Milcah bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother. And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, had also given birth to Tebah and Gaham and Tahash and Maacah.1

Now I’m sure you found this news absolutely riveting, right? Who cares about the genealogy of Nachor? Why would the Torah, usually so cryptic and concise without even one superfluous letter, let alone word, tell us all the people in Abraham’s extended family? Why is this necessary?

Rashi explains that after the near-death of his son, Abraham agonized over the fact that he hadn’t yet found him a shidduch.

So the Torah tells us that Abraham was informed that “Bethuel begot Rebecca.” This entire paragraph is in the Torah just for these few critical words. Bethuel, Nachor’s son and Abraham’s nephew, had a daughter named Rebecca. A new cousin was born, a little girl who would grow up to become a worthy wife to Isaac and matriarch for her people. So Abraham was given a Divine hint as to where he should go to find a wife for his son.

Let me share with you an excellent insight I once heard from the late master orator Rabbi David Hollander.

Let’s visualize what happened. And it was told to Abraham… presumably by some anonymous well-wisher.

Hey, Abe, I just got back from a visit to your brother Nachor. He’s doing well, your brother. Not just well, but fantastic! He’s got a big family; 8 sons, in fact. And lots of grandchildren. Even his concubine is giving him children!

Now contrast that with Abraham’s story. Look at his life. Look at what he’s just gone through, what he’s been through all his life.

Abraham could easily have thought to himself:

Hey, G‑d, what’s going on here? I slave away. I’m a good Jew. I’ve dedicated my whole life to spreading Your word and teaching all these pagans that You are the One and Only G‑d in the world. And what do I get for my troubles?

My wife suffers from infertility. Finally, I take Hagar and she gives me Ishmael who only gives me problems, no nachas, only heartache. And finally, finally, I am blessed with a son named Isaac through Sarah, and this son of mine is already 37 years old, and he’s still not married!

Now look at my brother Nachor. No problems, no drama, no hassles, no hiccups. He’s got a nice house, with a white picket fence; he has a wife and kids, even grandchildren.

G‑d Almighty, I ask You: Is this fair!? I go and break my back for you and all I have is tsuris! He hasn’t lifted a finger for you, and he lives a peaceful, happy life. No problems, no stress.

But Abraham did not say that. He didn’t even think it. He accepted his lot in life as part of G‑d’s vast, eternal plan, and carried on doing what had to be done: spreading the word of G‑d in the world and laying the foundations for Jewish Peoplehood and Jewish Destiny.

Is this not a powerful lesson about the Children of Abraham…today?

We go about our business, and we are happy, secure in the knowledge that G‑d will not let us down. We learn from Abraham that even if it is difficult, and other people have it far easier, we still do what must be done. Because that’s what we’re here for. It’s our mission and yes, with that sense of ‘chosenness’ does come a greater measure of responsibility. And we accept that. Happily.

We bear no resentment that others may have an easier life. We derive satisfaction knowing that we have acted correctly, morally, ethically… and Jewishly.

We don’t expect instant rewards. Virtue is its own reward. Schar mitzvah, mitzvah,2 “The reward for a mitzvah is the mitzvah itself.” We live without guilt, without shadows over our heads. Yes, the takers of this world may eat better; but the givers sleep better.

And so, we remain the children of Abraham, who did what he had to do, no matter what was happening to his brother, or his cousins, or anyone else.

We will do what we must do. That’s how we got to this point in time. And I suspect that this is how it will be until the end of time.

Haftarah for Shabbos Parshas Vayeira

Kings II 4:1-37.

In this week's Torah reading, G‑d promises a child to Abraham and Sarah, despite childless Sarah's advanced age. This week's haftorah describes a similar incident that occurred many years later — the prophet Elisha assuring an elderly childless woman that she will bear a child.

The haftorah discusses two miracles performed by the prophet Elisha. The first miracle involved a widow who was heavily in debt, and her creditors were threatening to take her two sons as slaves to satisfy the debt. When the prophet asked her what she had in her home, the widow responded that she had nothing but a vial of oil. Elisha told her to gather as many empty containers as possible — borrowing from neighbors and friends as well. She should then pour oil from her vial into the empty containers. She did as commanded, and miraculously the oil continued to flow until the last empty jug was filled. The woman sold the oil for a handsome profit, and had enough money to repay her debts and live comfortably.

The second miracle: Elisha would often pass by the city of Shunam, where he would dine and rest at the home of a certain hospitable couple. This couple even made a special addition to their home, a guest room designated for Elisha's use. When the prophet learned that the couple was childless, he blessed the woman that she should give birth to a child in exactly one year's time. And indeed, one year later a son was born to the aged couple.

A few years later the son complained of a headache and died shortly thereafter. The Shunamit woman laid the lifeless body on the bed in Elisha's designated room, and quickly summoned the prophet. Elisha hurried to the woman's home and miraculously brought the boy back to life.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to  [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.
