The Nine Days of Mourning Conclude THIS Sunday Night
This Shabbos is called Shabbat Chazon, as it is the Shabbos before the 9th of Av / Tisha B’Av. The Nine Days of mourning culminate on Tisha B’Av. During the Nine Days there are several extra observances, which are meant to demonstrate our sadness and internalize the keen sense of loss due to the destruction of the Holy Temples.
During this time, other than on Shabbos, we refrain from eating meat or drinking wine, wearing freshly laundered clothing, luxuriating in a bath/shower, listening to music, or engaging in festive celebrations.
Ninth of Av Services – THIS Saturday Night & Sunday
Saturday night, August 2 through Sunday, August 3 is Tisha B’Av. We commemorate the destruction of both Holy Temples, the first by the Babylonians and the second by the Romans, as well as other calamities that befell our people throughout Jewish history.
Please note our special schedule:
Saturday evening at 7:47pm – The fast begins (no service)
Saturday night at 9pm – The evening service followed by the Book of Lamentations / Megillat Eichah
Sunday at 8:30am – The morning service without Tallit and Tefillin followed by Kinus
Sunday at 6:45pm – The afternoon service with Tallit and Tefillin
Sunday at 8:13pm – The evening service followed by light refreshments to break the fast.
On Tisha B’Av we observe several important laws and customs:
We do not eat or drink, bathe, wear leather shoes, anoint ourselves with oils/creams, or engage in marital relations.
We sit low to the floor (just like someone who is in mourning during Shiva) until midday (on Sunday).
If one normally sleeps with two pillows, one is used instead.
We do not go on any pleasure trips, nor do we go to any entertainment events, and certainly no parties.
We refrain from work if possible.
When washing hands in the morning, we only wash until the knuckles.
We recite Havdalah at the end of Tisha B’Av, because this year it begins Saturday night.
He who mourns the Holy Temples will merit to see the Third Holy Temple built, speedily in our days!

We are done working on our annual Jewish Art Calendar for the year 5786 and are sending it in to our graphic designer. At present, we are still seeking someone to dedicate the calendar. Dedicating the calendar in honor of, or in memory of a loved one is a beautiful way to do something meaningful and uplifting, while benefiting the community at the same time.
The full sponsorship is $3,600, while half sponsorship is $1,800.
We also welcome business ads and personal greetings.

An Important Note about Kiddushes –
The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).
There is no such thing as an exclusive Kiddush sponsor.
This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.
We thank you for your support and understanding!
