HIGH HOLIDAY APPEAL

Baruch Hashem, we had incredible High Holiday services. Yom Kippur services were truly inspiring led by Rabbi Eilfort, with beautiful davening by Rabbi Yossi Rodal, and our amazing guest Cantor, Rabbi Dovi Gorelik. The feedback has been spectacular!

During services Rabbi Eilfort announced an exciting influx of teachers into our community to help us fully utilize our Educational Level, which will be coming online in the next few weeks, G-d willing. Our community will not welcome Rabbi Sholom and Rebbetzin Mushka Eilfort, but we will also be hosting a group of Rabbinic students. The additional personnel are joining us so we can facilitate more Torah study, more prayers (additional Minyanim to be added), and more acts of kindness.

This will precipitate an upsurge in activity and the amount of light and goodness emanating from our center will grow exponentially!

President of our community, Len Hyman, spoke about the beauty of making the shul part of your legacy, as he has done. (Please respond to this email for further information.)

Rabbi Eilfort invited the hundreds who attended over the course of the holidays to invest in the present and future of our community by responding ‘early and often’ to our yearly appeal. Our Adult Education offerings are growing dramatically.

HOSHANAH RABBAH – SPECIAL SERVICE

The culmination of the first part of the Sukkos holiday takes place on Hoshanah Rabbah, when we observe an unique and important Mitzvah using the Aravos – the willow twigs. Our Sages teach us that we are judged regarding water, and so there is an intensity involved with the day. We will have a special service at 8:30am on Monday, October 13 to mark this special occasion. We hope to see you here!

WHAT HAPPENS ON SIMCHAS TORAH? WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?

Simchas Torah is when we conclude the yearly cycle of reading through the Torah and begin it again anew. This is a GREAT accomplishment! Whenever we conclude a portion of the Torah it is a cause for celebration, but when we conclude the entire Torah, it is a particularly happy occasion.

Normally, celebrating the Torah involves intense study and analysis. On Simchas Torah at night, however, the holiness and grandeur of the Torah is so awesome, we celebrate merely being in its presence.

And so we DANCE! DANCE! DANCE!

We circle the Bima seven times, much like a bride circling the groom, during a wedding ceremony.

We sing our hearts out with pure pleasure!

The children are a key component of the celebration, so we make sure to have lots of goodies to help enhance their experience. Flags, stuffed Torahs, and gifts are the order of the day.

Speaking of order of the day, during the day of Simchas Torah the children are called up to the Torah for an Aliyah.

Every year the Perez family sponsors our delicious banquet and this year will be no different. Our crew is already hard at work preparing a Mexican Fiesta menu, that will be as pleasing to the eyes as it is to the palate.

There is no charge to attend, but we appreciate knowing (by responding to this email) if you will be joining us on Tuesday night, October 14^th at 6:30pm.  

Don’t forget Shmini Atzeres the night before and the day leading up to Simchas Torah. Shmini Atzeres is so important that we say the Yizkor Memorial service on Tuesday, October 14^th at approximately 12pm.

The final part of the Sukkos celebrations will be energizing and inspiring! Please plan on being here with your Chabad family.

The Educational Level is progressing beautifully! Anyone who wants a personal tour is invited to respond to this message. 

Our Project Manager and General Contractor report the following: 

Walk-in coolers have been assembled. Powering up hasn't happened yet...

Door installation is continuing.

Bathroom accessories installation will begin this week. 

Library books will be moved downstairs over the next couple of weeks.

Rabbi’s office will be moved downstairs in the next couple/few weeks. 

Flooring installation has begun and is mostly done (some can't be completed until after the elevator installation). 

Ceiling tiles waiting for elevator installation.

Tile installation has been completed.

Stucco work completed. 

The installation of the lighting has been completed.

Installation of our custom cabinets & library shelving is completed.

The elevator is currently scheduled to be delivered and installed towards the end of October. G-d willing, after the elevator is installed, we will be ready to have our final inspection by the City and be granted our Occupancy Permit.

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Haftorah for Shabbos Chol Hamo’ed Sukkos

Ezekiel 38:18-39:16.

The subject of the haftorah of this Shabbat is the war of Gog and Magog that will precede the Final Redemption. Its connection to the holiday of Sukkot is that according to tradition the war will take place during the month of Tishrei, the month when the holiday of Sukkot falls. In addition, this war is identical to the one described in the fourteenth chapter of Zachariah, the  haftorah read on the first day of Sukkot, which concludes by saying that the gentile survivors of this war will be required to go to Jerusalem every year on the holiday of Sukkot to pay homage to G‑d.

The prophet describes Gog's war against Israel and G‑d's furious response. G‑d will send an earthquake, pestilence, great floods and hailstones and fire—utterly destroying Gog's armies.

"And I will reveal Myself in My greatness and in My holiness and will be recognized in the eyes of many nations, and they will know that I am the Lord. . . . I will make known My Holy Name in the midst of My people Israel, and I will no longer cause My Holy Name to be profaned, and the nations will know that I, the Lord, am holy in Israel."

The haftorah concludes by  saying that the weaponry of the defeated armies of Gog will provide fuel for fire for seven years! The Jews "shall carry no wood from the fields nor cut down any from the forests, for they shall make fires from the weapons."

Haftarah for Shmini Atzeres

I Kings 8:54-66.

The setting for the haftorah for the holiday of Shemini Atzeret is the dedication of the first Holy Temple by King Solomon. The dedication was a seven-day festive affair, which was immediately followed by the seven festive days of the holiday of Sukkot. And then, as we read in this  haftorah, on the "eighth day" (i.e., Shemini Atzeret), Solomon sent the people off to their homes.

The reading opens immediately after King Solomon concludes a lengthy public prayer to G‑d. He then blesses the assembled Jewish people and encourages them to follow G‑d's will and observe the commandments—it is this blessing that occupies the bulk of the reading.

The King then inaugurates the Holy Temple by bringing various offerings: peace offerings, burnt offerings, and meal and fat offerings. And then, "on the eighth day he dismissed the people, and they blessed the King and went to their homes, rejoicing and delighted of heart for all the goodness that G‑d had wrought for David His servant and for Israel His people."

Haftarah for Simchas Torah

Joshua 1:1-18.

This week's Haftorah describes Joshua's succession of his master Moses, whose passing is discussed in the Torah reading.

G‑d reveals Himself to Joshua, and appoints him as Moses' successor. G‑d encouraged Joshua to lead the Israelites in to the Holy Land. "Every place on which the soles of your feet will tread I have given to you, as I have spoken to Moses. From this desert and Lebanon to the great river, the Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the great sea westward shall be your boundary." G‑d assures Joshua that He will be with him just as He was with Moses and encourages him to be strong and brave, to study the Torah constantly and keep it close, so that he may succeed in all his endeavors.

Joshua orders his officers to prepare the Jewish people to cross the Jordan River. He then tells the members of the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh, who had chosen to settle on the eastern bank of the Jordan, to go and assist their brethren in the conquest of the Canaanite mainland, after which they would return to their plot of land. The Jewish people pledge their allegiance to Joshua: "Just as we obeyed Moses in everything, so shall we obey you. Only that the L-rd your G‑d be with you as He was with Moses."

A Note About Charitable giving in 2025 from Rina

Give as much as you can for the maximum benefit on your tax return.

Why?

Because the law in 2026 is changing.

Your charitable donations will be limited to anything over 0.5% of your modified gross income (MAGI).

Say you contribute $10,000 in cash donations in 2025, and you are in the 22% income tax bracket.

You will be able to take the full amount of the contribution if you itemize, reducing your taxable income by 22%

In 2026 – if you make the same donation – Your deduction on your taxes would drop because you could only take $9,500 of it.

And if you donate under the limit imposed by your MAGI – then you can take 0 deductions.

You will be required to do some detailed tax planning when making your charitable contributions going forward. But until 2025 – take advantage of the full amount of your charitable deduction to help your favorite nonprofit.

Our number one priority is to ensure the safety and security of our shul family. While we have a robust security system in place, we have gone to the added expense of hiring a uniformed, armed guard, who is with us, watching over us, in addition to our internal security team. This added layer of security is expensive at a cost of $300 per week.

Volunteering

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FOURTH year! It was sponsored by Channah Hale and now carried on in her memory.

We are at the point that we need NEW volunteers to drive and deliver food packages around the area.

Please consider making this a part of your Friday routine. Volunteers pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah at 3:00pm and delivering them to the door of the recipients. Volunteers also get soup and challah!

There are a number of patients at UCSD La Jolla that have come from Israel to receive transplants here. They need our help!

Bikur Cholim of S Diego is a community organization helping the sick with care packages, visitation, driving spouses to and from the hospital, etc.

The Foundation Project  - City Approved Plan

We are raising funds that will be used towards completing our basement. This project will include a TEEN LOUNGE, MULTIPURPOSE ROOM, a LIBRARY, OFFICES, STORAGE SPACE, BATHROOMS, and more. Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email   [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
