Ethics of Our Fathers Class after Kiddush on Shabbos

In between Passover and Shavuos we have the time-honored custom of studying Pirkei Avos – the Ethics of Our Fathers on Shabbos afternoons. One of the Rabbis (or Rebbetzins) will share some thoughts on these intriguing and inspiring teachings following the Kiddush. Everyone is welcome!

Rabbi Sholom and Rebbetzin Mushka are working hard on putting together summer plans for the children. It is going to be VERY exciting! Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement of the exact dates and other relevant info.

Channah & Arthur Hale Jewish Learning Center Building Update

The Educational Level is progressing beautifully and is nearing completion! Anyone who wants a personal tour is invited to respond to this message. 

Our Project Manager and General Contractor report the following: 

Walk-in coolers have been assembled. Shelving installed. (see pics) Condensers installed. AAAAND they are powered up!

Doors have been hung and painted and doorknobs installed. Baseboards done (see pics).

Bathroom accessories installed progressing (changing table in).

Kitchenette countertop and sink have been installed (see pics).

Laundry room sink installed (see pics).  Appliances have arrived and are installed (see pics).

Rabbi’s office will be moved downstairs in the next couple/few weeks. 

Flooring installation is done and baseboards completed.

Ceiling tiles installed.

Tile installation has been completed.  Elevator Stucco completed.

The installation of the lighting has been completed.

Installation of our custom cabinets & library shelving is completed

Library books have been moved downstairs and are almost done being organized. Lots of new books were received. We are creating a system so books may be borrowed.  

BARUCH HASHEM, the elevator company IS DONE doing the final adjustments! The state inspector gave us a passing grade! Now we call back the City inspector for our long-awaited Occupancy Permit! We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Baruch Hashem!

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

The Art of Self Improvement/Transformation

The self-help industry is quite robust in this country. Walk into a bookstore or library and check out the vast array of works available on the subject. Or do some scrolling on YouTube after typing in ‘self-help’ in the search bar, and endless videos are sure to keep your feed full for months. Self-help is a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Upon further examination, one will realize that many of the maladies addressed by the multitude of ‘mavens’ (those who know the answers), are maladies that only seem to be problematic in countries of great wealth. In other words, places where (perhaps) people have too much time on their hands and find issues in places where folks from less wealthy societies would merely laugh and shake their head.

As an aside, and not in any way denigrate anyone’s passions and/or feelings, there are even people who specialize in making pets feel happier, and they are making a living (sometimes a generous living) doing so. California Psychics have ‘animal communicators’ on standby and ready to help.

In fact, as in all human pursuits, there is a Torah perspective and solution to the self-help genre. Not surprisingly, Torah self-help is long on rationality and individual empowerment, and short on quick fixes and gimmicks.

From the second day of Passover through the coming holiday of Shavuot, the Time of Receiving the Torah, we focus on self-improvement. We are in the midst of transforming ourselves, as we follow in the footsteps of every generation of Jews of the past 3,300+ years.

A very special and meaningful Mitzvah, called Sefirat Ha’omer / counting the Omer, is now in session. Every night we count the days, demonstrating how we are anticipating the holiday on which we commemorate receiving the Torah on Sinai. Our tradition teaches us that we were also spiritually present at that momentous time, and furthermore each year a new element of that colossal manifestation of G-dliness is lovingly gifted to us. 

Consider for a moment the dramatic change undergone by our ancestors. Following generations of back-breaking slave labor an entire nation received the Torah, the wisdom of the Almighty, and immediately immersed themselves in its divine wisdom. Their minds shifted from how to make bricks into how to transform the mundane, physical world into an abode for the Creator!

They were able to achieve this unequalled transformation because they chose to do so. They embarked on the ultimate self-improvement project in all recorded history. Attribute by attribute, character trait by character trait, they worked on themselves.

They meditated on G-d’s presence in their lives and the world around them. They contemplated the Holy One’s blessings and nurtured love for Him as well as awe of His greatness. These emotions informed their thinking processes, as well as how they spoke and of course how they acted.

They climbed the ladder reaching the highest pinnacles of human spiritual achievement, and then they understood that they had readied themselves to receive the Torah inwardly with sincerity and with unmitigated joy! 

The successful formula is in front of all of us, available to us. We just have to decide to follow the plan!

May we be blessed with the internally generated motivation to reach our true potential.

Haftorah for Shabbos Rosh Chodesh

When  Rosh Chodesh — the “head of the month,” the one or two semi-festive days marking the beginning of each Jewish month — falls on  Shabbat, as is the case this week, a special haftorah is read instead of the usual one. This haftorah concludes with the assurance that during the Messianic Era all Jews will once again come to the Holy Temple to worship on every (Shabbat and) Rosh Chodesh.

Isaiah 66:1-24.

The prophet Isaiah relays G‑d's message: one of encouragement to the poor on those of a contrite spirit, and reproach to the sinners who offer insincere sacrifices, thinking they can atone for their immoral lifestyles. The prophet continues to prophesy about the Future Redemption and the ingathering of all exiled Jews, comparing the process to childbirth, "Who heard anything like this? Who saw anything like these? Is a land born in one day? Is a nation born at once, that Zion both experienced birth pangs and bore her children? For so says the Lord, '...Like a man whose mother consoles him, so will I console you, and in Jerusalem, you shall be consoled. And you shall see, and your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall bloom like grass...'"

These rewards, however, are reserved for those "tremble before G‑d's word." Those who oppressed Israel, however, will then be justly punished for their deeds.

We have a wonderful security guard who keeps a watch over us while we are in services.  

Our number one priority is to ensure the safety and security of our shul family. While we have a robust security system in place, we have gone to the added expense of hiring a uniformed, armed guard, who is with us, watching over us, in addition to our internal security team. This added layer of security is expensive at a cost of $300 per week.

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FIFTH year! It was sponsored by Channah Hale and now carried on in her memory.

We are at the point that we need NEW volunteers to drive and deliver food packages around the area.

Please consider making this a part of your Friday routine. Volunteers pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah at 3:00pm and delivering them to the door of the recipients. Volunteers also get soup and challah!

The Foundation Project  - City Approved Plan

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email   [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
