Our monthly Men’s Club meets the first Sunday of the month at 2pm. We share a word of Torah, some spirited conversation, some outstanding camaraderie, and some light refreshments. There is no charge to attend, but we do appreciate knowing if you plan on coming.

Dear Community,

We have enjoyed a transformative year! Bigger and better things are on the horizon, please G-d. The Addy and Arthur Hale Educational level has been the driving story of the year. After a lot of blood, sweat, and tears we are in our new space and using it daily. It adds so much to our campus. While the demo progresses upstairs, we are even using it for Davening in the mornings.

But there is more going than just the building of our physical building. We are building a community, thanks to all of you.

We have hosted countless services, events, and classes on campus and off. Together we have brought meaning and joy to a lot of friends. Imagine, we have conducted events as varied as uplifting and inspirational High Holiday services and cookouts on the beach. We have hosted women’s events and our ever-popular men’s club. We have offered hundreds of religious counseling sessions. We have officiated at weddings, funerals, and everything in between.

Our preschool, Coastal Gan, has gone ‘gangbusters’! In fact, we are full and have a waiting list for next year, Baruch Hashem. Our Gan has a sterling reputation, and we are getting inquiries by families as far away as S. Diego.

These successes are due to our dedicated staff and amazing community.

Once a year we ask you to make a financial commitment specifically to the community. This is an opportunity to show your love and support to an institution that is here for you 24/7. Humanitarian Requests

Two humanitarian opportunities came our way this week, which I hope our community can address.

One comes from a wonderful family of a single mom with two children. Unfortunately, the father doesn’t help financially. The mother doesn’t work. The three of them live together, at great personal sacrifice, as committed Jews. One of the children has a heartfelt desire to study for a year in a Yeshiva in Israel. Despite persistent requests being made by several different ‘influential’ sources, no financial aide (grants or scholarships) have been found. The cost of room, board, and tuition (not including travel) is over $25,000. Mom is able to come up with a substantial amount but is still short.

A friend brought a humanitarian request to me, which I am sharing here. A young, non-Jewish, political refugee needs financial assistance due to an injury he suffered while working. Channah & Arthur Hale Jewish Learning Center Building Update

The Educational Level is completed! We are in the process of moving everything into its place. Anyone who wants a personal tour is invited to respond to this message. 

Our Project Manager and General Contractor report the following: 

Rabbi’s office is set-up and being used.

The library is being organized. B’H, we have a beautiful collection of books. 

Turf has been installed in the children’s play area downstairs. 

Upstairs Commercial Fridge has been Removed making way for Ice Machine and Mixer.

The Phase 3 Demolition is in full swing.

The walls of the Rabbi’s old office and the previous library have been torn down.

The wiring has been rerouted and the HVAC system has been updated.

The T-bar ceiling has been reconfigured.

The painting has begun and will continue for the next several days. (DURING THE WEEK, Davening will take place downstairs.)

New flooring will be installed after the painting is completed.

The work area is sealed off from the sanctuary and will remain so until demo is complete. 

Much of the furniture downstairs has arrived and has been assembled.

The Great Room downstairs looks magnificent and is getting better every day.

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Mystical Insights into Summer

It’s (almost) everyone’s favorite time of the year. We are heading into summer. The days are longer and warmer. Everything seems to move at a more relaxed pace. The children are bursting with energy, which they get to express in the great outdoors. Speaking of outdoors, many uncover and heat up the grill to enjoy the miracle of a great American barbecue. Families take vacations together. Everything seems brighter and cheerier in the summer.

It is a time-honored Jewish tradition, powerfully articulated by Rabbi Yisroel Baal Shem Tov, to learn from everything we experience, and then to apply those lessons in our service of G-d. What is learned from summer?

In Kabbalah, Jewish Mysticism, we find that the physical environment reflects spiritual truths. What happens in this physical world is a consequence of Divine energies flowing through the supernal worlds, ultimately filtering down to ours, known as the World of Action. When it is sunny and warm (e.g. summery), it means there is enhanced divine energy manifested above. At the same time, ironically, what we choose to do ‘down here’ has an influence ‘up there.’ When humans exercise our free choice to serve G-d, this initiates a divine reciprocity, where increased blessings flow downward into our world. 

The longer and warmer days of summer reflect this reality. Ergo, the summer is the season of enhanced divine revelation. And since there is more revealed G-dliness, there are more opportunities to serve our Creator. Not only is more daylight conducive to leisurely outdoor barbecues, it is also conducive to staying up later and studying more Torah! A longer Shabbat likewise gives more opportunity to Daven/pray at a more relaxed pace, learning extra Torah, and spending more time with our families and friends (as well as a bit more napping time Shabbos afternoon). We rabbis anticipate our summer sermons, during which we wax truly eloquent.

We started by speaking about the children so let’s conclude with them.

They spend more time outdoors and less time in the classroom. It is hence the perfect time for them to get healthier with more physical activity, thus allowing them to feed into their natural joy and vivaciousness. They then pack up all of that energy and draw upon it during the year. The healthier they are, the more they will be able to truly delve deeply into their studies and other positive pursuits.

This summer be prepared to imbibe deeply of the manifestations of divine blessings so your spiritual batteries are fully charged and ready to head into the  Jewish New Year brimming with health and vitality!

Haftorah for Parshat Beha’alotecha

Zechariah 2:14 -4:7.

This haftorah contains a vision of the golden Temple Menorah, whose daily kindling is discussed in the opening of this week's Torah reading.

This prophecy was communicated by Zechariah shortly before the building of the Second  Temple. The  haftorah opens with a vivid depiction of the joy that will prevail when G‑d will return to Jerusalem: "Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for, behold! I will come and dwell in your midst, says the L-rd."

The prophet then describes a scene in the Heavenly Court: Satan was seeking to incriminate Joshua, the first High Priest to serve in the Second Temple, because of the "soiled garments" (i.e. sins) he was wearing.  G‑d himself defends the  High Priest: "And the Lord said to Satan: The Lord shall rebuke you, O Satan; the Lord who chose  Jerusalem shall rebuke you. Is [Joshua] not a brand plucked from fire?" I.e., how dare Satan prosecute an individual who endured the hardships of exile? "And He raised His voice and said to those standing before him, saying, 'Take the filthy garments off him.' And He said to him, 'See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I have clad you with clean garments.'"

G‑d then proceeds to outline the rewards awaiting Joshua if he and his descendents follow G‑d's ways. The ultimate reward is, "Behold! I will bring My servant, the Shoot, " an allusion to Moshiach, the Shoot of David.

Zechariah then describes a vision of a golden seven-branched  Menorah. An angel interprets the meaning of this vision: "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel [descendent of King David, one of the protagonists in the building of the Second Temple], 'Not by military force and not by physical strength, but by My spirit,' says the Lord of Hosts." Meaning that Zerubbabel's descendent,  Moshiach, will have no difficulty in his task, it will be as simple as lighting a menorah.

We have a wonderful security guard who keeps a watch over us while we are in services.  

Our number one priority is to ensure the safety and security of our shul family. While we have a robust security system in place, we have gone to the added expense of hiring a uniformed, armed guard, who is with us, watching over us, in addition to our internal security team. This added layer of security is expensive at a cost of $300 per week.

Volunteering

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FIFTH year! It was sponsored by Channah Hale and now carried on in her memory.

We are at the point that we need NEW volunteers to drive and deliver food packages around the area.

Please consider making this a part of your Friday routine. Volunteers pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah at 3:00pm and delivering them to the door of the recipients. Volunteers also get soup and challah!

The Foundation Project  - City Approved Plan

We are raising funds that will be used towards completing our basement. This project will include a TEEN LOUNGE, MULTIPURPOSE ROOM, a LIBRARY, OFFICES, STORAGE SPACE, BATHROOMS, and more. Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email   [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
