Message from Chabad.org

As we begin the book of Deuteronomy, Moses delivers his final message to the Jewish people. He looks back on the ups and downs of the previous forty years and speaks honestly about the mistakes they made. Yet before doing so, he made sure they knew where they stood with him.

Moses had just led the Jewish people to victory over the powerful kings Sichon and Og, helping secure land that would become part of their future home. His actions showed that he was completely devoted to their wellbeing. When he later spoke about their shortcomings, his words were heard because they came from someone who had already shown his love and commitment.

There’s an important lesson here. Most people can accept criticism when they know it comes from someone who truly cares about them. We all respond better when we feel respected and valued.

That message is especially fitting as we enter the Jewish month of Av. Next week we will mark Tisha B'Av and mourn the destruction of the Holy Temple. Our sages teach that the Second Temple was lost because of needless hatred between Jews. If division helped bring about its destruction, then kindness and stronger relationships are what can help bring healing.

We cannot fix every problem in the world, but we can choose how we treat the people around us. The Torah reminds us that these are often the very things that have the greatest impact.

Shabbat shalom,

Nine Days of Mourning Continue

The 17th of Tammuz marked the beginning of The Three Weeks period of mourning which culminates on the 9th of Av, commemorating the conquest of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Holy Temple and the dispersion of the Jewish people.

Weddings and other joyful events are not held during this period; like mourners, we do not cut our hair, and various pleasurable activities are limited or proscribed. (Consult the Code of Jewish Law (Shulchan Aruch) or a qualified rabbi regarding specific proscriptions).

The Lubavitcher Rebbe urged that the Three Weeks should be a time of increased giving of charity and Torah study (in keeping with the verse (Isaiah 1:27), "Zion shall be redeemed by law, and her returnees by charity"), particularly the study of those portions of Torah that deal with the laws and the deeper significance of the Holy Temple.

The observances become stricter as we get closer to the Ninth of Av (Tisha B’Av), especially from Rosh Chodesh Av and onwards. The Shabbos before Tisha B’Av is called Shabbos Chazon. Tisha B’Av begins on Wednesday, July 22nd and continues through Thursday, July 23rd.

During the Nine Days we refrain from eating meat and drinking wine (except on Shabbos), wearing freshly laundered clothing, luxuriating/bathing in hot water, while we continue to observe the previously mentioned strictures of the Three Weeks of Mourning.

TISHA B’AV OBSERVANCES & SCHEDULE

On Tisha B’Av itself we do not eat or drink, bathe, engage in marital relations, anoint ourselves in oils/creams, or wear leather shoes. We also sit lower to the ground (like someone sitting Shiva) until midday, and many sleep on fewer pillows than what we usually do.

Tisha B’Av services include the public reading of the Book of Lamentations (7/22 at 8pm), morning services (without Tallis and Tefillin) on 7/23 at 8:30am followed by Kinus, and the afternoon services (with Tallis and Tefillin) on 7/23 at 7pm. The evening services and conclusion of the fast will take place at 8:22pm. A light break-the-fast will be served.

ANNOUNCING A TORAH-LEARNING SUMMER

We are most excited to announce the arrival of a corps of Yeshiva students who are here for the summer! Our Bochurim are here to learn with members of the community, help with our daily Minyan, and engage in outreach activities.

Be sure to come on Shabbos so you can meet our Bochurim and get to know them.

NEW MEMBERSHIP YEAR ARRIVED JULY 1ST

Dear Community,

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY FILLED OUT AND RETURNED THEIR MEMBERSHIP FORMS!

We have enjoyed a transformative year! Bigger and better things are on the horizon, please G-d. The Addy and Arthur Hale Educational level has been the driving story of the year. After a lot of blood, sweat, and tears we are in our new space and using it daily. It adds so much to our campus. While the demo progresses upstairs, we are even using it for Davening in the mornings.

But there is more going than just the building of our physical building. We are building a community, thanks to all of you.

We have hosted countless services, events, and classes on campus and off. Together we have brought meaning and joy to a lot of friends. Imagine, we have conducted events as varied as uplifting and inspirational High Holiday services and cookouts on the beach. We have hosted women’s events and our ever-popular men’s club. We have offered hundreds of religious counseling sessions. We have officiated at weddings, funerals, and everything in between.

Our preschool, Coastal Gan, has gone ‘gangbusters’! In fact, we are full and have a waiting list for next year, Baruch Hashem. Our Gan has a sterling reputation, and we are getting inquiries by families as far away as S. Diego.

These successes are due to our dedicated staff and amazing community.

Once a year we ask you to make a financial commitment specifically to the community. This is an opportunity to show your love and support to an institution that is here for you 24/7. Membership is our life’s blood. Without your financial support we cannot do what needs to be done. We are blessed with a selfless community that excels at acts of kindness.

Now is the time to make your commitment.

Please be so kind as to fill out the membership form online: www.chabadatlacosta.com/membership.

From the bottom of our hearts please accept our deep appreciation for your kindness and generosity!

Sincerely,

Rabbi and Rebbetzin Yeruchem & Nechama Eilfort

Sinai and Civics
The Jewish ethics that shaped America’s founding

In time for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this four-session course reflects on the Jewish ethics, ideas, and values that inspired and influenced America’s founders—and that still shape our government and society today.

Was it always self-evident that all people are “created equal”? What is the “pursuit of happiness”? What inspired America’s system of checks and balances? And looking ahead, what steps can we take to build a just and united future?

  (No previous Jewish learning necessary.)

This course will satisfy the continuing education (CLE) requirements of lawyers and legal professionals.

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

A Timeless Love Story: Our Relationship with the Creator

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

The conclusion of the Jewish calendar year coincides with the conclusion of our yearly cycle of reading the Torah. Lessons found in the Book of Deuteronomy (Devarim), the fifth and final installment of the Five Books of Moses, known as the Chumash in Hebrew, are the perfect messages we need to hear and learn as we prepare to stand before the Almighty in judgment during the impending High Holidays.

The Book of Devarim is unique. While it certainly rehashes some of the most important parts previously mentioned in the Torah, it also adds a lot of new information. Students of Torah will point out that the ‘tone’ of this book differs from the previous books, in that the voice of Moshe Rabbeinu, Moses our teacher, is more emphasized and keenly felt. There is more of a ‘human element’ in Deuteronomy. Moses refers to himself in the first person, as opposed to the third person references previously encountered.

Many scholars view this book as Moses’ last will and testament to his beloved people, the Children of Israel.

What messages were conveyed?

It is certainly true that the Jewish failures during their journey through the desert are alluded to and used as learning tools (teaching us what NOT to do). To me, the most dramatic lesson is the powerful love G-d expresses for the Jewish people. Moses, the ultimate prophet, teacher, and leader of the Jewish people continually reminds his people to love and stay true to G-d, while he continually reminds them that G-d loves them. The expression of this love is powerful, beautiful, and inspiring.

In the beginning of the Book of Deuteronomy (Chapter 1 Verse 11) we read, “May G-d, G-d of your forefathers, add to you a thousand times as many as you are! May He bless you as He spoke concerning you.”

Think about it. If that is not a strong testament of G-d’s love for His people, I don’t know what is. G-d loves us so much that he wants more of us. Imagine telling one’s spouse, “I love you just the way you are!”

What are we to do with this love?

Human nature dictates that we reflect love. When someone loves us, we love him/her back. When we contemplate the message of this particular passage it will cause the naturally occurring love for the Almighty within us to flourish and grow exponentially. We will find ourselves meditating upon the Creator’s involvement in our lives, which of course enhances that involvement.

When the G-dly love quotient rises to such a level, it helps us achieve more in every aspect of our divine service. Much like a newly married couple who are (almost) completely focused on their spouse, our conscious thought becomes immersed and enveloped by the Divine Presence. Occasionally we are blessed to see such a person, who clearly “Walks with G-d.” An aura is exuded that lights up his surroundings and uplifts all around him.

Can there possibly be a better way to enter the High Holidays, the Days of Judgement?

This process allows us to enter the High Holidays filled with anticipation and terrific confidence. In the beginning of Deuteronomy this emotional development starts, it then grows as we progress throughout the last several weeks leading to the High Holidays. Let us all resolve to internalize these teachings and make the most of our potential!

Parshas Devarim During the Three Weeks of Mourning

Isaiah 1:1-27.

This week's haftorah is the third of a series of three "haftarot of affliction." These three haftarot are read during the Three Weeks of mourning for Jerusalem, between the fasts of 17 Tammuz and 9 Av.

Isaiah relays to the Jews a G‑dly vision he experienced, chastising the residents of Judah and Jerusalem for having rebelled against G‑d, criticizing them for repeating their errors and not abandoning their sinful ways — even after having been reprimanded and punished. "Woe to a sinful nation, a people heavy with iniquity, evildoing seed, corrupt children. They forsook  G‑d; they provoked the Holy One of Israel." Harsh words are employed, comparing the Jewish leaders to the rulers of Sodom and Gomorrah. G‑d states his distaste for their sacrifices and offerings which were flavored with pagan customs. "How has she become a harlot, a faithful city; it was once full of justice, in which righteousness would lodge, but now it is a city of murderers…"

Isaiah then speaks gentler words, encouraging the people to repent sincerely and to perform acts of justice and kindness towards the needy, orphans and widows, and promising them the best of the land in return for their obedience. "If your sins prove to be like crimson, they will become white as snow; if they prove to be as red as crimson dye, they shall become as wool." The  haftorahconcludes with a promise that G‑d will eventually reestablish Israel's judges and leaders, when "Zion shall be redeemed through justice and her penitents through righteousness."

Note: The first word of the haftorah is "Chazon" ("The vision [of Isaiah]"). The Shabbat when this haftorah is read, the Shabbat before Tisha b'Av, is thus called "Shabbat Chazon," the "Shabbat of the Vision." According to chassidic tradition, on this Shabbat the soul of every Jew is treated to a "vision" of the third Holy Temple that will be rebuilt with the coming of Moshiach. Click here for more on this topic.

Enhanced Security

We have a wonderful security guard who keeps a watch over us while we are in services.

Our number one priority is to ensure the safety and security of our shul family. While we have a robust security system in place, we have gone to the added expense of hiring a uniformed, armed guard, who is with us, watching over us, in addition to our internal security team. This added layer of security is expensive at a cost of $300 per week.

Please help us by donating to the security of our shul community by following this link: www.chabadatlacosta.com/donate. The cost is approximately $300 per week. All donations are tax-deductible.

How to Make a Donation (or Payment)

We would be nowhere without the generous support of our community. Please know that your support is profoundly appreciated!

There are many ways to donate besides checks and cash. Following, please find a list of the various other ‘platforms’ that are available for secure donations that go directly and entirely into the synagogue account (even though they say Nechama's name).

Volunteering

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FIFTH year! It was sponsored by Channah Hale and now carried on in her memory.

We are at the point that we need NEW volunteers to drive and deliver food packages around the area.

Please consider making this a part of your Friday routine. Volunteers pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah at 3:00pm and delivering them to the door of the recipients. Volunteers also get soup and challah!

New Mitzvah Opportunity

Bikur Cholim of SD Volunteers Needed! Message me if you would like me to share the spreadsheet for visitation hours.

There are a number of patients at UCSD La Jolla that have come from Israel to receive transplants here. They need our help!

Bikur Cholim of S Diego is a community organization helping the sick with care packages, visitation, driving spouses to and from the hospital, etc.

If you are able to give a few hours of your time, it will make another person's day that much better!

The Foundation Project  - City Approved Plan

We are raising funds that will be used towards completing our basement. This project will include a TEEN LOUNGE, MULTIPURPOSE ROOM, a LIBRARY, OFFICES, STORAGE SPACE, BATHROOMS, and more. Call Rabbi to inquire about available dedications. The money we raise also goes towards scholarships for Hebrew School students, our Challah and Chicken Soup program, and all of our ongoing expenses.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to   [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

Belonging to a Jewish Community is not only gratifying and fulfilling it is also extremely important, for within the community one finds a place to connect with G-d and one’s soul, a place of learning and spiritual enrichment, a great source of friends, a place to bestow one’s Jewish legacy upon his or her child/ren, and so much more. Check out   www.ChabadatLaCosta.com to learn more.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.
