Message from the Rabbi

This week we read of the priestly blessing, which the kohanim are bidden to confer upon the congregation.

It’s strange. G‑d is the source of blessing, yet He asks mere mortals to get up in front of the congregation and bless them according to a formula, which He dictates. What gives?

The answer, I believe, cuts to the very core of why we were created. Sure, He could have done it all on His own. For that matter, He could have created the world in a way that nothing needed to be done in the first place. Taking it one step further, He didn’t even need to create the world.

But He did make the world, and He placed it in our puny little hands. If I may be so bold, He is telling us the following message, “Hey there. I love you, and I want you to love Me back. I am going to give you a world that needs fixing, lacks blessing, and I am going to give you the tools to make it happen. And when you do that, our love grows.”

In fact, perhaps that is the meaning of the berachah the kohanim say before conferring the blessing: “Blessed are You . . . who has commanded us to bless His nation Israel with love.”

Chabad Weekly Update

NO JLI THIS WEEK DUE TO SHAVUOT

Shavuot THIS Week!

Bring Your Friends

The Holiday of Shavuot marks the anniversary on which G-d gave the Jewish people the Torah. This is considered the single greatest event in all of history. To celebrate we make sure to attend the synagogue and listen to the Torah reading of the 10 Commandments (bring your friends, too). We also stay up (all night if possible) learning Torah, eat dairy meals, and joyously celebrate this awesome event. This year the holiday begins June 3rd and concludes June 5th. Services will begin at10am each day.

The highlight of the services will take place on Wednesday the 4th at approximately 11:00am, which is when the 10 Commandments will be read, and Thursday the 5th at approximately 11:30am, which is when the Yizkor Memorial Service will be recited.

It is considered a great Mitzvah to listen to the 10 Commandments. Year after year, since the year 2448 in the Jewish Calendar (we are now in the year 5774), Jews all over the world, wherever they lived, endeavored to listen to the timeless words of the Torah.

Everyone is invited to participate in this meaningful service that will take place at our storefront location. The Dairy Kiddush Luncheon will take place at the Rabbi’s home. For further information call the shul at 760-943-8891 or email the shul at [email protected].

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Minyan

Our daily Minyan has been a tremendous source of good will for our community. Several people have been able to utilize the Minyan in order to say Kaddish for a loved one. Others have become accustomed to the great Mitzvah of davening with a Minyan because there is one readily available. Beginning this week, a couple of our regulars will be out of town for the next several weeks. We therefore need a few additional commitments so that the Minyan doesn’t slow down, G-d forbid. We are asking those who are able to make a commitment to the Minyan to please do so now. Some people are counting on our Minyan to be able to recite Kaddish for their loved ones. This is tremendously important. Please commit to a day or two per week (at the very least). People who have joined the Minyan have universally reported that they find the experience uplifting and have described it as a great way to start the day. Please respond to this message if you are able to help us in this regard.

HebrewSchoolInfo

Hebrew School has instituted some exciting changes to emphasize Hebrew language skills.

When dropping of your child(ren) at Hebrew School, please feel free to stick around and observe how much the children are learning. Morah Nechama covers many areas of the Siddur - prayer book each week and the students learn Hebrew months and numbers.

Hebrew School takes place on Sundays at our storefront location. Please contact Hebrew For further information contact[email protected].

Matching Campaign Continues

A great and generous benefactor has stepped forward and pledged a $500,000 matching funds grant to help us finish off our project. If/when this amount is matched by our community, by our friends, by you, we will be ‘there’. We will have an exceptionally beautiful facility that will be a permanent asset to the entire community. I invite you to take the virtual tour by logging onto www.ChabadatLaCosta.com and following the link. I am sure you will be impressed. However, your participation is needed now, especially with this new, unforeseen need to expedite the repair work and the added rental obligation so we can hopefully be in our new building by the New Year.

We have asked each member family to contribute at least $5000 to our building fund in addition to their membership donations – that comes out to only $416 a month, which is tax deductible. That means the actual cost out of your pocket is only $250 in post-tax refund money (check with your tax advisor). Membership donations cover the expenses of operations while building fund donations are strictly used for construction costs. Thanks to a few generous families we will make it sooner or later, but we need everyone to participate to move this process along and to make sure that everybody can experience the joy of giving. Some families have given more than the minimum requirement. But many haven’t given at all, and this is truly disappointing. This complex will be your place of worship, study, and joy! What about your loved ones – won’t they need traditional Jewish services as well? Therefore if you haven’t already made your building fund contribution, it is needed now, so the work can be completed. Remember the example of our ancestors who when Moses called upon them to donate for the Tabernacle they responded so enthusiastically that Moses had to tell them to stop bringing more! I pray for a similar response from our community. We need such a responsenow.

We are currently working on a beautiful donor acknowledgement board that will be prominently displayed so that all of you who made this dream into a reality will be properly honored for your generosity. This plaque will be a place where you will want your name displayed for perpetuity. Any donation to the Building Fund in excess of $5000 will be acknowledged on the Board even if you cannot make a larger donation. Please make your commitment today. Please respond immediately and generously to this heart-felt appeal. Please call me directly to discuss naming opportunities at 760-612-4577, or simply respond to this message by making your pledge and sending it right in.

Thank you and good Shabbos!

Learn the Code of Jewish Law with Rabbi Eilfort

A daily class in practical Jewish Law is held immediately following the Minyan in our storefront location taught by Rabbi Eilfort. Using the Code of Jewish Law, known in Hebrew as the Shulchan Aruch, participants are able to discuss the laws while learning about the ongoing opportunities one has to serve the Almighty on a moment-by-moment basis. The class begins at about 8:50am and lasts for about 20 minutes. There is no charge to attend.

Hebrew Class for Adults Continues

Would you like to work on your Hebrew skills? On Wednesdays at 6:30pm – 7:30pm and meeting in the storefront location there will be a weekly Conversational Hebrew class for adults. This class will be taught by Morah Ronit Barach, a professional teacher with more than 20 years experience. The suggested donation is $5-$10 per class. The regular Torah portion of the Week class will then commence following the Hebrew Class in the same location.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
