Message from the Rabbi

This Shabbat has a special name, Shabbat Nachamu, taken from the first words of this week’s haftorah reading: nachamu nachamu ami (comfort, you shall comfort My nation). The Midrash teaches that the word “comfort” appears twice because of the twofold nature of the consolation: once for the destruction of the first Holy Temple and once for the destruction of the second Holy Temple.

Each of the two Temples was unique. The third Temple, with which G-d will comfort us, will incorporate the special aspects of both of them. And besides, this time it will last forever.

Chabad Weekly Update

10 Commandments Read – THIS Shabbos!

This week’s Torah portion, Parshat Va’Etchanan includes the 10 Commandments. Our Sages have taught that it is considered a great Mitzvah to listen attentively to this particular reading. Everyone is invited to join us tomorrow for services, which begin at 10am. The Torah reading will commence at approximately 11am. Be sure to come and bring your family and Jewish friends!

The Finish-Line Approaches – Your Help Needed to get There

Dear Friends,

Have you heard the GREAT news?! G-d willing, we will be in our gorgeous new complex before THIS year’s High Holidays! If you haven’t driven past our construction site (1980 La Costa Ave., Carlsbad), you haven’t seen the dramatic progress we’ve made. If you would like a personal tour please feel free to call me at 760-612-4577.

This is the most exciting time in Chabad at La Costa’s history.

We have been tremendously blessed with a generous outpouring of community support – some of it from completely unexpected sources. It’s true, our small, modest project turned into something much grander and more beautiful. These changes insure our future in this complex for the long-term, and will allow us much more flexibility in serving the needs of a growing Jewish community in North County.

We are in the home stretch and YOUR help is needed to reach the finish line. We are just over $150,000 shy of reaching our financial requirements to achieve occupancy. Due to numerous miracles coupled with lots of very hard work more than $2.5 million has been raised thus far. Immediate help is needed with the last $150,000 required for occupancy, and it is needed now. Are you able to invest in the future of Judaism? Do you know someone who you can approach for assistance in this sacred opportunity?

Several important dedications are still available. All dedications will be appropriately honored as we are currently working on plans for an impressive donor acknowledgement wall that will be prominently displayed in the Breezeway. Even if you cannot afford one of the ‘big’ dedications please help bring our communal dream to fruition. Every contribution of $5,000 and up will be acknowledged on our coming donor acknowledgement wall, and all other contributions will likewise be indicated in a dignified manner.

Remember, High Holiday services will take place in our new complex. Our beloved Rabbi Shapiro will be here as our Cantor. And, G-d willing, YOU will join us to partake in our inspiring and joyful High Holiday experience. Immediate reservations are required to attend, as seating will be limited. The donation for seats is included in membership – so please, if you haven’t already done so, fill out and return the membership form. If you need one all you have to do is ask.

And please, vote with your checkbook for a vibrant Jewish community here in North County. We need you to please step forward now, and to do your best as we build our future together!

May you and your family be inscribed in the Book of Life!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Time to Help Israel

As we know Israel is engaged in a fight for her very life. The ever-changing political landscape has undergone a radical transformation over the past several years and past stalwart friends of the Jewish state are now the very powers that push Israel to ‘show restraint’ and make deadly concessions to a murderous regime. In fact, there is no difference between Israel’s current enemies and the Nazis (may their name be erased), except for two critical details: 1. Today’s enemies now also have a religious conviction that all Jews must be exterminated wherever they may be, G-d forbid! And 2. Today’s Jews are better able to defend themselves due to our beloved Israel.

When people, particularly in the mainstream media and the UN, complain about a disproportionate response by Israel, or keep a running total of the enemy’s casualties without giving the context for their suffering (ie they elected and support a homicidal death-cult form of government), rest assured that these are the words of the enemies of the Jewish people, and indeed, the enemies of free people everywhere. If you see a double standard, where only the enemy’s suffering is reported on or where equal weight is given to the propaganda emanating from the murderous enemy (a people who use their own children as human shields and who were planning a massive massacre of the Jewish people to take place on Rosh Hashanah of this year) and the Israeli Government, which has placed its own soldiers in harm’s way to protect the enemy’s civilian population, you must know that those issuing these reports have an anti Israel / anti Jewish agenda. There is no middle ground.

Thank G-d, in the Congress of this country there has been great moral clarity in decisively laying blame for all of the death, destruction, and suffering squarely where it belongs; on the enemy. But we cannot take this support for granted, as the winds may be shifting in this country (like it has already shifted in much of Europe). Loud and sometimes violent anti Israel / Jewish demonstrations have already taken place in Los Angeles, Seattle, Florida, New York, and other places as well. The enemy has infiltrated even here. And so we, who are Israel’s friends, must show support like never before!

It is time for everyone to call their Federal and State politicians and call for unequivocal support for Israel. That means picking up the phone and calling the White House, your Senators, and your Representative. That means responding to skewed news reports in newspapers and magazines and contacting television and radio stations when they vilify Israel. That means using social media, like Facebook, in continually posting pro Israel articles. And that means speaking to friends and neighbors who may not understand the facts. Of course all of these things must be done in a very polite and respectful manner.

Finally, and most importantly, we must all turn to our Father in Heaven and ask for His continual blessings to safeguard our beloved Israel and our brothers and sisters living in harm’s way. We must add in the Mitzvot we do, the Torah we learn, and the Charity we give for Israel’s sake. We are here to help you in this regard. If you would like to put a Mezuzah on your door, which is a sign of divine protection, we can get you one. If you would like to put on Tefilin, which are said to strike fear in the heart of Israel’s enemies, we will help you with that. If you need to learn how to light Shabbat candles correctly, or make your kitchen Kosher, we can help. Together we can do this!

Special Prayers Needed

Please keep Michoel ben Sofia in mind who is in need of a Refuah Shelaimah (a complete and speedy recovery). Your prayers help!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Minyan

Our daily Minyan has been a tremendous source of good will for our community. Several people have been able to utilize the Minyan in order to say Kaddish for a loved one. Others have become accustomed to the great Mitzvah of davening with a Minyan because there is one readily available. Beginning this week, a couple of our regulars will be out of town for the next several weeks. We therefore need a few additional commitments so that the Minyan doesn’t slow down, G-d forbid. We are asking those who are able to make a commitment to the Minyan to please do so now. Some people are counting on our Minyan to be able to recite Kaddish for their loved ones. This is tremendously important. Please commit to a day or two per week (at the very least). People who have joined the Minyan have universally reported that they find the experience uplifting and have described it as a great way to start the day. Please respond to this message if you are able to help us in this regard.

Matching Campaign Continues

A great and generous benefactor has stepped forward and pledged a $500,000 matching funds grant to help us finish off our project. If/when this amount is matched by our community, by our friends, by you, we will be ‘there’. We will have an exceptionally beautiful facility that will be a permanent asset to the entire community. I invite you to take the virtual tour by logging onto www.ChabadatLaCosta.com and following the link. I am sure you will be impressed. However, your participation is needed now, especially with this new, unforeseen need to expedite the repair work and the added rental obligation so we can hopefully be in our new building by the New Year.

We have asked each member family to contribute at least $5000 to our building fund in addition to their membership donations – that comes out to only $416 a month, which is tax deductible. That means the actual cost out of your pocket is only $250 in post-tax refund money (check with your tax advisor). Membership donations cover the expenses of operations while building fund donations are strictly used for construction costs. Thanks to a few generous families we will make it sooner or later, but we need everyone to participate to move this process along and to make sure that everybody can experience the joy of giving. Some families have given more than the minimum requirement. But many haven’t given at all, and this is truly disappointing. This complex will be your place of worship, study, and joy! What about your loved ones – won’t they need traditional Jewish services as well? Therefore if you haven’t already made your building fund contribution, it is needed now, so the work can be completed. Remember the example of our ancestors who when Moses called upon them to donate for the Tabernacle they responded so enthusiastically that Moses had to tell them to stop bringing more! I pray for a similar response from our community. We need such a responsenow.

We are currently working on a beautiful donor acknowledgement board that will be prominently displayed so that all of you who made this dream into a reality will be properly honored for your generosity. This plaque will be a place where you will want your name displayed for perpetuity. Any donation to the Building Fund in excess of $5000 will be acknowledged on the Board even if you cannot make a larger donation. Please make your commitment today. Please respond immediately and generously to this heart-felt appeal. Please call me directly to discuss naming opportunities at 760-612-4577, or simply respond to this message by making your pledge and sending it right in.

Thank you and good Shabbos!

Learn the Code of Jewish Law with Rabbi Eilfort

A daily class in practical Jewish Law is held immediately following the Minyan in our storefront location taught by Rabbi Eilfort. Using the Code of Jewish Law, known in Hebrew as the Shulchan Aruch, participants are able to discuss the laws while learning about the ongoing opportunities one has to serve the Almighty on a moment-by-moment basis. The class begins at about 8:50am and lasts for about 20 minutes. There is no charge to attend.

Hebrew Class for Adults Continues

Would you like to work on your Hebrew skills? On Wednesdays at 6:30pm – 7:30pm and meeting in the storefront location there will be a weekly Conversational Hebrew class for adults. This class will be taught by Morah Ronit Barach, a professional teacher with more than 20 years experience. The suggested donation is $5-$10 per class. The regular Torah portion of the Week class will then commence following the Hebrew Class in the same location.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
