Chabad Weekly Update
Guest Cantor THIS Shabbos We are happy to announce that we will be treated to the melodious prayers of renowned Cantorial soloist, Rabbi Dovber Gorelick this Shabbos. Please be sure to join us for his inspiring prayers.
Baruch Hashem, thank G-d, we had a truly outstanding Purim! Beautiful crowds enjoyed our services and the Purim Banquet was particularly fun (especially the Rabbi’s ‘magic’ show). Yes, some of us may have been under the ‘affluence of inkle-hol’ but the behavior remained appropriate. Special thanks to our very own Sheila Lebovitz for a most-delicious feast, Brenda Joseph for the beautiful Purim baskets (Shalach Manos), Naomi Alter for her fantastic Hamentaschen, and the whole crew who worked so hard so everyone could enjoy!
Please note that special Yarzeit Minyans are needed Sunday at 6:30pm and Monday at 8am in observance of the Yarzeit of Howard Plant. If you can help us with this important Mitzvah please respond to this message.
This week’s Kiddush is sponsored by the Alter Family in memory of Esther bas Yaakov and Avram ben Meyer. Everyone is invited to join us for this beautiful weekly gathering!
Kiddush Sponsorship If you have not sponsored a Kiddush for a while and/or if you have a birthday, anniversary, or perhaps a Yarzeit you wish to mark, please respond to this message. Kiddush sponsorship begins at $180. A Thought from the Rabbi In the words of an old saying, “What goes up - must come down.” When you awaken on the day after Purim this could be a problem, for who wants to come down from the spiritual high experienced on Purim? Not me! I want to stay in the clouds – seeing every glass as half full and feeling love and appreciation for everyone I encounter. Purim teaches us the lesson that everything is possible. In the blink of an eye the Almighty can transform the direst of circumstances into utter redemption and joy! Notice the operative word, “teaches,” not “taught.” The lesson of Purim cannot be relegated to the past (tense). On the contrary, it is meant to be recounted in the present tense. It must stay with us at all times. In the Code of Jewish Law there is an interesting excerpt that states if one read the Megillah backwards he has not fulfilled his obligation. Now who would do such a ridiculous thing? The meaning of this law is actually he who views the lessons of Purim as being in the past has not fulfilled his/her obligation in reading (and learning from) the Megillah. What this law is telling us is that we need not step down from the highs of Purim. In fact we are meant to use the joyousness we experienced on Purim as a stepping stone or even a spring board to greater things! We build on the joy of yesterday to make today better and tomorrow better still. In the words of Psalms (in matters of holiness) we are meant to go ‘from strength to strength.’ When it comes to our divine service we must endeavor to continually grow. Of course this can be a huge challenge! That is where the other commandments associated with Purim come in handy. The love and community-building engendered by our copious charity giving and Shalach Manos (food gift giving) helps create the support system that assists us in our mission to achieve perpetual forward motion and growth. The Creator helps us in this regard as well. When we make the honest effort G-d will help us along the path to happiness and success. To better illustrate this point here is a salient quote from the Rebbe’s HaYom Yom(Thought for the Day) of 16 Adar II: “Divine Service for the business person includes arousing within himself the faith and perfect trust in the One Who feeds and sustains all flesh, that He will provide him with an ample livelihood. He must be truly happy and cheerful, as though all his livelihood were already in hand.” (Emphasis Added). We are truly blessed! We get to transition from the frenetic happiness of Purim to (perhaps) a more peaceful joy on Shabbos! Still not feeling it? Go to shul, pray with a group, study some Torah (and listen closely to the Rabbi’s sermon), enjoy some Kiddush goodies, and you will see what I mean! Jewish Community Day with the San Diego Gulls
The Jewish Federation and the JCC are sponsoring a special Jewish Community Day with the San Diego Gulls on Sunday, April 3rd with tickets at only $18 each (which includes entry to the game and a tee shirt). For an additional $5 there is a skate after the game. The after game skate has limited availability and is first come first serve. At the game visit the Gulls' Marketing Tent and purchase your spot and skate rentals for $5. The Gulls will be playing Stockton in the Sports Arena. To find out more information you can log onto www.SanDiegoGulls.com/JewishCommunity or click here. Several people from our community are going, so carpools are possible. Please respond to this message if you are interested in participating. Passover Plans ‘16 Chabad at La Costa will again be offering a full array of Passover activities designed to educate the Jewish residents of North County in an engaging and meaningful way while encouraging additional observance of the special Passover traditions.
In addition to the classes mentioned above Chabad will be hosting a complete schedule of joyous and meaningful holiday services (holiday flyer to be mailed). The highlight of the holiday are the warm and traditional Sedarim (traditional Passover meals). When the rabbis, of blessed memory, codified the Seder, they managed to create the ultimate in interactive learning opportunities. The hands-on approach of the Seder, and the inclusive nature of the narrative, ensures that everyone – particularly the children – have a meaningful experience that will not only make a strong positive impression now, but will create positive lifelong memories. Everyone is invited to partake of our home-cooked, Kosher for Passover, Sedarim. Information and reservations can be made by visiting www.ChabadatLaCosta.com. Cell Phones & Chatting During Services Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation. Shul Etiquette Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family. At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul. It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like. Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services. We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). What a GREAT Purim!
Special Minyans Needed
Kiddush this Shabbos
To properly celebrate Passover preparation is the key, and to this end there will be a two-part ‘Preparing for Passover’ Seminar taught by Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort, Director of Chabad at La Costa. On consecutive Mondays, April 4th and 11th at 7pm the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of Passover will be explored. Not only will practical advice be offered (“How do I prepare my home for this special holiday?”), but also rich stories and explanations will be shared (“Wow! Such great thoughts to share at the Seder Table!”). There is no cost to attend this popular two-part series, however reservations are required by sending an email to
For the first time we are thrilled to announce that Rabbi Eilfort will be offering a tour of the newly-opened Gelson’s Supermarket (located directly adjacent to Chabad) with an emphasis upon Kosher for Passover products found in the store. The tour will take place on Wednesday, April 13th at 7:30pm and everyone is invited to join. There is no charge to participate.
