Volume 17 Number 44, 15th of Tammuz 5776, July 21st '16

Friday, 22 July, 2016 - 4:02 pm

Message from the Rabbi

It’s that time of year. Shabbat is supposed to be a fast, commemorating the start of three weeks of mourning and sadness. But the fast will be delayed to Sunday out of deference for this special day of gladness and spiritual delight that G-d has gifted His people.

This sets the tone for the next three weeks. Yes, we will mourn. Yes, we will genuinely introspect and see what we can do better. But we will remember that there is more to life than sadness. There is Shabbat, there is joy, there is tranquility and hope.

Please join me in praying that we soon experience the day when G-d will “wipe the tears of every face,” as we enter the “day that is only Shabbat and rest for eternal life.”

The Three Weeks of Mourning

17th of Tammuz – 9th of Av

In our long history there have been times that have been particularly difficult. Most notably are the days associated with the destruction of the Holy Temples. The first Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in the year 586 BCE. First they laid siege to the City of Jerusalem, which happened on the 10th of the Hebrew month of Tevet. Then on the 17th of Tammuz they breached the outer walls of the city leading to its destruction three weeks later on the 9th of Av.

The days associated with the destruction of the Temples have been designated as fast days; days on which we are prohibited from eating or drinking. In fact, the entire period from the 17th of Tammuz until the 9th of Av (this year the 10th of Av because the 9th is on Shabbat and only fast on Shabbat when it coincides with Yom Kippur) is a time of sadness. We observe some of the rituals of mourning during this time. We are prohibited from listening to music, getting married, buying new clothes, and getting our hair cut. The observances become even stricter during the last nine days of the Three Weeks, when we cannot eat meat or drink wine, or take luxurious hot-baths and the like.

This year the Three Weeks and the fast for the 17th of Tammuz is delayed until the 18th of Tammuz, which is Sunday, July 24th. The fast begins at 4:27am and ends at 8:21pm. Our custom is to give extra charity on this day and to spend extra time in prayer and doing good deeds. Until such time that the Holy Temple is rebuilt – may it be speedily in our days – it is as though it was destroyed due the sins of our generation.

Dear Friend & Supporter,

We have had an exciting year here at your Jewish Center. So many programs – so many services, so many classes, so many parties, etc., but, and this is a big but, we have so much more to do! This is going to be a very big year. We are poised to offer more Jewish opportunities than ever before to you, our shul family.

Now, on to the business at hand. Everything that we do/provide to the community costs us money. We know that you already know this, but we have a mortgage that costs money, the electricity costs, the phone costs, the Internet access costs, the books cost, the food costs, and the gas in my car costs money. Due to these costs (and many more like them) we need friends to partner with us so that we can accomplish all that needs to be accomplished. Not to put too fine a point on it, but we need YOU. YOUR support is our lifeblood.

Of course we want more than just your money (“More than just my money?!,” you exclaim.). Yes, more than just your money.

First of all we don’t want all of your money – just a small percentage actually. Secondly, we want your participation! That means you coming to all (or at least some) of the wonderful things mentioned above is also extremely important and demonstrates your support.

With all of the above in mind PLEASE take a moment and fill out the Membership Form and Calendar Ad Form found on our website, www.chabadatlacosta.com,  ASAP. Those simple documents help us know where we stand and where we should be going to help better serve you and your family’s needs.

All joking aside, please make the commitment to become an official member this year.

G-d bless you and your family with all manner of good, particularly good health, happiness, and success in all of your positive endeavors!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Jewish Art Calendar

We are now collecting ads for our gorgeous Jewish Art Calendars. Brenda Joseph will be helping manage this year’s edition so we expect it to be the best yet. Not only are the calendars lovely to look at, but they are full with information about Jewish holidays, special events, and even recipes! The special touch that we have is the personalization where we can add your own birthdays, anniversaries, or the Yarzeits of those you love.

We are also looking for a sponsor/dedication for this year’s calendar.

Participating in the calendar is an important way to support the Shul as well as advertise your business or personal event. Please call the office today for pricing information at 760-943-8891. The deadline for all orders is July 31st!

Special Wishes

HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes go out to Marianne Rack, and all of those celebrating their birthdays this week!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wishes go out to all of those celebrating their anniversaries this week!

We remember Marcus Mintz, and all of those who have a Yarzeit this week.

May Fran Sekela, Roz Mintz and Mel Bridge be blessed with a full and complete recovery!

Hebrew School

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Our students want to be here!

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected]your request.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to[email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
