Message from the Rabbi

It seems as if wanderlust is almost built into the Jewish DNA. After millennia of wandering from Judea to Persia, to Babylon, to the Iberian Peninsula, to Northern Europe, and then to North America (with many more stops along the way), we’ve almost accepted it as a matter of fact that we will soon need to pick up and move again.

And it all began in this week’s Torah portion. G-d told Abraham to leave his homeland and travel to the land of Canaan. Shortly thereafter, famine forces him down to Egypt. And that was just the beginning…

These travels had deep meaning in them. In every place he went, Abraham declared G-d’s unity and invited others to accept Him as the Creator of heaven and earth

suitcase-2.jpgSame can be said for our national sojourns that have spanned the millennia and the continents. Wherever we went, we brought Torah, morality and G-dliness.

Sometime soon, the world will be so suffused with G-dly light that we will have completed the mission Abraham began so long ago. And then “the L-rd will be one and His name will be one.” May it happen immediately. Amen!

Chabad Weekly Update

No Politics This Shabbos

Emotions are running very high following this week's historic election. There is an unfortunate divide in our nation and even amongst our people. In the spirit of  Shabbos we are calling for unity. Therefore it is better that all political discussions be left at home. PLEASE - no discussions about politics this week. Let the healing begin!

New JLI Course Beginning THIS WEEK

“How Success Thinks”

At the core of “How Success Thinks” are six key productivity concepts, from motivation and goal setting to creativity and relationship building, which explain why some people get so much done. Drawing on 3000 years of Jewish wisdom from the Talmud and Kabbalah – as well as the latest findings in neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral economics – this eye-opening course explains that the most productive people on earth don’t merely act differently; they view the world, and their choices, in profoundly different ways.

By learning how to cultivate your signature strengths, adopt a growth mind-set, access your inner well of creativity, deal with weaknesses, and overcome procrastination and other obstacles that lie in the way of your success, Jewish wisdom and positive psychology will help you get more of what you want and less of what you don’t.

Wake up and realize your full potential, gain absolute clarity about you’re after and how you’re going to get it, and boost your overall energy and effectiveness as you explore fascinating Jewish insights into the workings of the human psyche.

Sign up today by logging onto www.myjli.com. For more information call 760-943-8891 or register online at www.chabadatlacosta.com/JLI. The six-week course is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 15th at 7pm. The cost is $100 per person, but if you bring a friend you get our buy one get one half off deal.

How Success Thinks is brought in partnership with the Washington School of Psychiatry and JLI. The course is accredited by several associations and boards for Continuing Education for Psychologists, Social Workers, LMFTs, Certified Professional Counselor and Physicians in most states.

THIS COURSE IS NOT TO BE MISSED.

Shabbat San Diego encourages a Shabbat experience that includes: spending time with family, visiting friends, attending services, studying Judaism, enjoying Shabbat dinner with traditional rituals, contemplating our life gifts, and singing.

We hope that by experiencing the magic of Shabbat just once, we can rejuvenate family and community life, restore Jewish pride and identity, and build Jewish unity across our community. Please join us by signing up at www.shabbatsandiego.org.

Teen Group Forming

Rabbi Elia and Rebbetzin Chaya are working diligently to create a very exciting Teen Club for the Jewish Youth in Carlsbad and Encinitas. The Club will engage in Social Service as well as entertaining activities. There will even be some educational opportunities involved. Check out www.cteen.com to see more.

All Jewish youth, aged 13 – 17 are encouraged to come to a special cookout on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, on Sunday, November 20th. The group will first get meet at the Shul and then go together to the beach. It will be chilly so dress warmly. While together the group will plan upcoming events and discuss how exactly they want this Club to work. There is no charge to participate in what promises to be an enjoyable event for our teens. Call Rabbi Elia at 760-586-6192 for further information. It is time to begin inviting our Jewish friends to join the Club!

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Chai for LIFE: Monthly Giving Program

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
