Message from the Rabbi

I recently heard a report on how some earthquakes that rocked California around a century ago may have been caused by oil drilling that took place in what has since become part of L.A.

Apparently, digging deep into the ground can have very dire consequences. But then, it also has wonderful results. Our mines produce fuel, precious stones, metals and more. Many people rely on wells for lifegiving water.

Digging deep is dangerous, but it is often crucial and rewarding.

This week we read about Isaac, sandwiched between Abraham and Jacob. The Torah tells us very little about him, save for his propensity for digging wells, particularly those that Abraham had dug before him.

The wells brought significant hardship, as other quarreled with him over the wells, claiming them as their own. But Isaac persevered, digging and digging, never giving up.

There is a well deep within us, full of the most amazing goodness. But we need to dig down to reach it.

Through hard work, faith, optimism, and consistency, we can dig deep into our personalities and discover strengths we never knew we had.

Let’s start digging.

Build-Your-Own Menorah @ The Home Depot, Encinitas – THIS SUNDAY

Last year was a smashing success so we are going for seconds! Sunday, December 4th we are having a program designed for the enjoyment of the whole family. The Home Depot in Encinitas (1001 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas) is again sponsoring this creative hands-on activity that children of all ages love. We will meet in the Home Depot parking lot, in the designated area. All of the materials, including paint, wood, tools etc., will be provided. All you need to bring is a smile, and perhaps some clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on. We will also be collecting unwrapped, new Chanukah gifts for underprivileged children and for the children in Israel whose homes burnt down. Please RSVP at 760-943-8891

Giant Menorahs & Car Menorahs

Gears (animated)There is a Mitzvah to ‘advertise’ the Chanukah miracle to the whole world. That is why the Mitzvah is to light the Menorah by the door or window facing outside. Just like the Menorah in the times of the Holy Temple lit up the world, so too do the Menorahs that each of us light illuminate the world. With this in mind Chabads at La Costa and Encinitas will be placing numerous giant Menorahs around town. We are also making available car Menorahs, that our own Rabbi Sruli made, to go on your car – so thousands and thousands of people openly see a reminder of the miracles of Chanukah. Remember, the message of Chanukah is that of ‘right makes might’ and religious freedom! Let us know if you want a car Menorah.

Chanukah Fun!

Grand Chanukah Party @ The Forum

Our Annual Chanukah Festival at the Forum Shops in Carlsbad is scheduled for Monday, December 26th from 4-6pm. We will light a giant Menorah, have all sorts of arts-n-crafts projects, and we will great live entertainment featuring our fabulous clowns Tango and Lomax! This year, to honor our military, we will be having an active-duty armed forces representative to light the menorah. There will be lots of delicious Chanukah treats like jelly doughnuts, homemade latkes with apple sauce, and lots more. Prizes for all the children will be given out and there will be raffles as well. Make your plans now to join us for this wonderful event perfect for the whole family!

Chinese Friday Night Dinner & Community Board Games

Everyone knows of the ancient Jewish Tradition of having Chinese Food on December 25th. Well, this year December 23rd (close enough, no?) happens to fall on a Friday – so we will have a beautiful Friday Night Dinner together featuring the most scrumptious Chinese Food. Candle lighting is at 4:30pm, followed by a family-friendly Friday night service. Dinner will be served at 5:30pm. Following dinner we will have board games available to play together. The cost to attend is $18 per adult and $10 per child – not to exceed $54 per family. Reservations are necessary to attend by calling 760-943-8891.

Annual Chanukah ‘Fun-Raiser’ @

The Alter’s

Aaron and Naomi Alter have established a beautiful annual tradition for our community as they host a Chanukah Party of epic proportions. Lots of ‘Vegas-style’ games (all for fun) will be available. Prizes for the biggest winners. The entrance fee is $25, which includes all the (strictly Kosher) food and fun you can manage in one night. All proceeds benefit the shul. We will be hosting this lively and enjoyable party on Saturday, December 31st beginning at 7pm. Yes, we realize that it is the secular New Year’s Eve – we thought a beautiful Chanukah party would be a great way to celebrate together and help the shul at the same time. We will have a Havdalah and Menorah Lighting ceremony and then it will be game time. This party is for those 13 and older. To make your reservations or for directions to the Alter’s house please call 760-943-8891 or email [email protected].

A Heart-Felt Request from the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

As we approach the end of the year it is time to take stock. Just as we are meant to examine ourselves on the Jewish New Year, particularly regarding our spiritual situation, so too we should use the end of the secular year to examine our material situation.

Thank G-d, we live in a place and time of unprecedented wealth and plenty. In all human history there has never been a time of such riches finding their way into the hands of so many. Yet unfortunately, many do not feel rich. Some people choose to focus on that which they do not have instead of that which they do have. For instance, I bet that nobody reading this article is worried about where his next meal is coming from or if he will have a roof over his head next week. These are the types of worries that previous generations had.

Every one of us should feel rich! While it may be true that we would like more (money, clothes, vacations etc.) it would probably be hard to argue that we need more. In the Ethics of Our Fathers (the ethical teachings in Judaism) we are taught; “Who is rich? He who is satisfied with what he has.” He who trains himself to be happy with his lot will be as happy as the richest person on the planet, in fact it can be argued that he is the richest person on the planet.

Gears (animated)It is with this in mind that I am asking for your help at this time. Many are thinking ahead to April 15th, Tax Day. Many are now making their decision about how much they want to contribute to a worthy cause and to therefore be able to maximize their tax deductions. I am asking that you include Chabad in your plans.

Your tax-deductible contribution does so much! It enables us to do something as simple as keep the lights on or bring chicken soup to someone who is not well, and it also helps us do something as sublime as teach a child the beauty of his/her heritage or hold inspirational services every Shabbat. Your generous contributions help us do all that we do, which makes you our partner in everything we accomplish. Indeed you are being offered the opportunity of ‘getting in on the ground level’ of the best investment possible; an investment with guaranteed results!

Please take a moment to share your gratitude for all that you have been blessed with by sharing with others. Please take a moment to log onto our secure website www.chabadatlacosta.com/donate, and make a profound difference in the life of all those whom we touch. You can also make your donation via check if that is more convenient.

G-d has given you the ultimate privilege, and that is to be His partner in perfecting this physical and mundane physical world and transforming it into something G-dly and beautiful!

G-d bless you for your generosity and support!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Eilfort

MAZEL TOV! Landscape Plans APPROVED (Finally!)

Baruch Hashem, thank G-d, our landscape plans have been approved by the City and we are ready to get started. First, a big shout out to our fantastic landscape architect, Rob Mekjian, who has worked incredibly hard to create a plan that is both beautiful and within our budget! Not only will our landscaping be drought-resistant, it will include Biblical plants and a desert-scape.

Speaking of budget we are trying to ‘self-perform’ as much of the work as possible so as to minimize costs. That means we are looking for volunteers who have ‘green thumbs’ and are ready to get digging and planting. This volunteering opportunity is also a great way for our high school students to get some of their required volunteer hours that they need.

We are also looking to get as much of the plant material donated as possible. We are proud to announce that Ben Williams will be donating the Queen Palms, and George Reh will be donating the plants and materials needed for our dry river bed. Marco Lunaman has also stepped forward to volunteer his abilities and resources to help make this happen.

If you would like to volunteer or see the plans please email Rabbi Eilfort. The correct email address is [email protected].

JLI Course - Continues This Week

“How Success Thinks”

At the core of “How Success Thinks” are six key productivity concepts, from motivation and goal setting to creativity and relationship building, which explain why some people get so much done. Drawing on 3000 years of Jewish wisdom from the Talmud and Kabbalah – as well as the latest findings in neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral economics – this eye-opening course explains that the most productive people on earth don’t merely act differently; they view the world, and their choices, in profoundly different ways.

By learning how to cultivate your signature strengths, adopt a growth mind-set, access your inner well of creativity, deal with weaknesses, and overcome procrastination and other obstacles that lie in the way of your success, Jewish wisdom and positive psychology will help you get more of what you want and less of what you don’t.

Wake up and realize your full potential, gain absolute clarity about you’re after and how you’re going to get it, and boost your overall energy and effectiveness as you explore fascinating Jewish insights into the workings of the human psyche.

Sign up today by logging onto www.myjli.com. For more information call 760-943-8891 or email [email protected]. The six-week course began on Tuesday, November 15th at 7pm. The cost is $100 per person, but if you bring a friend you get our buy one get one half off deal.

THIS COURSE IS NOT TO BE MISSED.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
